Floppy Disk Formatting

Hi, recently took the plunge and bought an amiga 1200.

I've got an old 2.5" harddrive lying around that I'd like to fit inside but haven't got the HD install disk.

I've got the adf image of the install disk that I've put on a 720k formatted disk but when trying to copy to the Amiga's ram disk, I get CRC errors (can't remember the exact error ... at work..)

I've tried with about 4 different disks now but same result. I'm using XP and to format the disks as DD used;

Format /T:80 /N:9 a:

Is this what is causing the problem? The disks work fine on the PC.

Thanks

You have to format the disk on your Amiga not on your PeeCee.
Than you need a program to tranfer (copy) your adf image into the Amiga formated Disk.
BTW have you read the FAQ.

Thanks for your answer. I have read the FAQ and was trying to use the Crossdos method for getting files to the Amiga, and then write the adf to a disk... (using adf2disk or something)

The files come up fine in workbench once Crossdos is enabled, I just get the errors when trying to copy to RAM:

I'm sure I used to bring work home from college this way on my old A600 - long time ago mind and the memory is not what it was

Try another disk.

Use only DD disks. HD disks often experience read errors when used in DD drives.

Yeah - Thanks guys, I'll try some more disks. I have tried 3 DD disk and 1 HD disk (with the hole taped up)

Perhaps I've just been unlucky!!

BTW the "format a: /f:720" command doesn't work on XP for me

Thanks for all your help..

Chain - thanks but no, I was trying to copy single files.

You should format the disks on the Amiga. If the Amiga can format the disk, it might also be able to read them after a PC has written data to it. Click once on PC0:???? and choose "format disk" from the menu.

If you are running xp semms that your computer might be relatively new, so i'm sure that like all the new mobos actually, the disk controller cannot format in another mode more than 1,44. This is why you can't format with the /720 option. And in the case you don't get any errors trying the other parameters you mention, it doesn't matter, the format resulted would be unusable.
Use a older machine to format it at 720kb or get a friend do it for you.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense - i have got a very old Amstrad 1512 pc lying around somewhere but I think it used 5 1/4" disk .. lol

I'll probably have a go formatting them on the Amiga.

I doubt that it has anything to do with the motherboard. XP just does not offer 720K any more. I run XP on the same motherboard as 98 before and 98 offered 720K and XP does not. Using DOS commands works in both cases, although the XP format command does not accept /720, too. With /T:80 /N:9 it works, though.

Microsoft just wants to force their users forward. You can't buy DD disks any more and therefore you also don't need to format them any more.

You can't buy dd disks anymore but hd disks works as well as dd disks, only make sure you put cellotape on the hole.
I use this on my classic 500 games and apps without problems.

hmmm

Tried all of the above with no success but....

Created a 720k format disk on another pc and this works fine!
Must be some sort of problem with the drive on my pc. It is a sff xpc with no floppy drive built in. I had just connected a spare drive to the fdd port which works fine on everything except transferring files to the Amiga.

Strange ... perhaps an incompatible floppy drive???
