I have Napalm(demo) working when booting Amithlon
with kernel boot options 'vga=769' 'video=dovesa' (640 at 8bit)

Maybe it will do with Nightlong too, can't find an Amiga demo
vga=784 is 640/15bit then (as Charlie said: your Card must support that)

It's not a prefered solution but work here

Thanks for the info...
and sorry for my misguiding...

The game was not Napalm, it was Earth 2140 which requests a BigEndian screenmode. I have too many CD's around these days, sorry. BTW what is the bigendiannes of a screen mode? I first got to learn about that.

I have Nvidia TI4200... One of the best supported cards by Amithlon... I'll try booting 15 bits... and write the results here...

that is the Byte-Order
big-endian = highest bit first
little-endian = lowest bit first

maybe known from our 68k processor (big-endian) compared to x86 (little-endian)
(IA-64 and some PPC can do both)

it's also used in some grafic stuff too. maybe some gimp user knows it better then me (it's sometimes used in gimp scripts)
it's the byte order there too

Yeah! I found Napalm in my Archive... It works very smoothly... Who needs sucking RedAlert when they can have Napalm... :P

When I try to boot with vga=784, kernel reports "Invalid Mode ID"... I think my VideoCard doesn't support 15bit modes.

ähm.. about nightlong, did you play it already?
the pc version can't be finished sometimes - hangUp where you have to go
to the sphinx. It might be of interest if this happens in Amiga version too.

Have a look on the table, maybe another modeID will do
depth | 640x480; 800x600; 1024x768; 1280x1024
(8bit) | 769, 771, 773, 775
(15bit) | 784, 787, 790, 793
(16bit) | 785, 788, 791, 794
(24bit) | 786, 789, 792, 795

I fiddled around with the available Amithlon kernel sources this weekend. The result are three patchsets for the original and new Bernie kernels, as well as the 3.00 Kernel from Gary (does anybody have the sources for his 3.10 kernel?)

Grab them here: *click*

You need the following kernel.org sources to base them on:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...2.4.12.tar.bz2
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...2.4.12-ac1.bz2

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...2.4.18.tar.bz2
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern....4.19-pre4.bz2

The Gary patch is based on the new Bernie kernel and adds some new drivers (network, sata, graphics cards).

The patchsets for the Bernie kernels are divided into three directories. The 'amithlon' directory holds the stuff I believe are the main Amithlon changes. The 'third-party' folder contains ALSA and ReiserFS patches that Bernie seems to have applied to the vanilla kernel before adding the Amithlon stuff on top - I don't know if they're needed for Amithlon to work correctly. The stuff in the 'noise' directory is only included for completeness - I don't think that it's relevant.

The main amithlon patch comes very close to the patch for the 2.4.35.3 kernel that's available on aminet.

I hope this is of some use for anyone.

Unfortunately it won't be as easy as "grab these patches and massage them into the latest 2.4 kernel" since some drivers (like graphics drivers) need some adaptions for Amithlon. This is exactly what Gary did.

But when I get some time I'll try it, I guess. I'll see if I can get Amithlon running in VirtualBox because right now I don't have any real disk space to spare.

If you have the time + patience I (and I suspect many others) would be most grateful.

Maybe someone has gary's 3.1 sources sitting on a HDD somewhere.

@Killabyte
Great what you figured out there
I think i will play with that, but i have weak skills on compiling/patching
a Kernel

The latest sources i've seen are somewhere in the middle of
3.00t1 and 3.10, it's named 3.00 so i guess that is the one
you have allready
If not:

It's a german board, maybe you know it

Yeah - these are the sources I used for the Gary diff. But yes - these seem to be stuck somewhere between 3.00 and 3.10

@KillaByte
I remember Gary had some trouble with his bandwidth, chances are the
3.10 sources never come to public

Yeah shame - too bad he didn't take the opportunity to distribute his sources in the form of patches. That would have resulted in smaller, less bandwidth hungry files.

I am grateful for Gary's kernels but the man has a big chip on shoulder if he cannot even respond to ANY email no matter how polite, even if to say "Not Interested".

KillaByte - give it a go.. we WILL love you for it

Not to raise too much expectations here - if I'll look into this any further it won't be in the next few weeks.
