Its much harder to get 600k by level 12 than it is to get 1M. Of course instead of milking the levels we would be trying not to hit anything.

I have a 1M score which I just got from running out of time on level 3-1 x3 times in a row (which was kinda legit because I genuinely collected too many apples), but I'll leave my score off the table for now until this gets sorted.
Agreed, I think something like this could be the only way..
Ladder would read something like:
1. ** - 650,300 lvl 15
2. ** - 690,220 lvl 15
3. ** - 500,100 lvl 13
4. ** - 765,320 lvl 10
etc.

I'm not entirely convinced that the glitch is caused purely from excess lives - remember on my last play through of over 1 million I only had a few lives left when it bugged out.
Looks like whenever you reach 1 million, entry to the next shop/level causes the lives counter to glitch regardless of how many lives you have.. the score counter glitches to - it flickers blue.. then bang - all lives lost and it's game over.

if the current system really is unworkable, then i propose score calcuation as described in the posts above. Highest level reach and lowest score decides the winner. Need the other mods to comment and also a few more of the competitors that have submitted scores.

competition score = (Level * 1 million) - score

note that all current scores will remain eligible.

I think trying to kill as few enemies as possible kind of goes against what the game is about, I don't really see much fun in that. I think we probably need to realise that not every game is absolutely perfectly designed for competition play and we should either just suck it up or not vote for it in the first place...

Its not going to effect me either way, its just every time one of these leeching or milking discussions starts their is just no fun in the round.

The score is based on hour glasses. It works like this:

Level 1-1
Pick up: x3 hour glasses = 3mins 15+ time remaining = 90k score
Pick up x2 hour glasses = 2mins 15+ remining = 75-80k
Pick up x1 hour glass = 1min remining = 50-60k
No hour glasses = on time + 15 seconds = 40-50k (if you hit things) or 10k (if you dont)
x1 Red Apple = - 30 seconds to all times above
x6 Red Apples + x3 hour glasses = 3 lives = -3mins = +15secs remining = 40k-50k/10k

In the new proposal, it would mean players can collect as much time and apples as they want, can repeat any level if they want, and not bother too much about playing to kill everything or hang around the level for any reason; which advances the newbies while giving the top crop something to rein them back. I think the last level breaks if the 'time out' happens more than twice or three times over the whole game anyway, so it's like a protection policy.

It's either that or we find the highest score this game can take before it breaks - which is not excellent really.

As is often the case, game breaking bugs dont show up until after it gets a bashing in the compo. No way to avoid these situations before hand. (although I did mention this on the lemon thread before we started the round).

@who - can you try the ADF to make sure this isn't just a whdload issue. Thanks.

Well at least you're honest, but isn't that score leeching? Which is against the rules in the first post.

I'm looking forward to giving this one a shot (even though I suck at platformers) once the scoring system is straightened out.

BTW, the MD version of this looks a lot more playable (easier!).

Thanks for the info on the scoring. It makes more sense now

Are you sure about the apples? I'm pretty sure that every time I picked them up I got killed instantly. Or are there poisoned apples too??
(FYI: I'm using the ADF version - which includes cheats at the start!! (no I don't use them))

mihcael and Graham, the new score system sounds good to me.

@lifeschool
Sure, I'll check out the ADF version after work today

@john1979
Score leeching was not my intention.. I just wanted enough lives to tackle the 3rd boss who fully deserves his title of "SOAB".

OK so I've checked out the floppy version and it behaves the same as whdload.
Scoring over a million causes the game to glitch regardless of lives.
I had only 2 lives and as soon as the score hit 1 million the game went wacko. About 1 min into the next stage I suddenly died losing all lives instantly.
Attached is a screen of the glitch in all it's glory.

Since scoring 1 million is entirely possible for what could be considered a 'normal run', mihcael's revised scoring system certainly wins my vote..

EDIT: I see my capture happened to be right when the lives counter was on '8', but trust me it was going crazy with random letters & numbers etc and the score count stays permanently blue.

If it's actually breaking the game (and it looks like it is) then yeah that is a problem and we should probably change the scoring system. Obviously that's gonna cause a lot of problems as it seems like a bug with the game itself.

Bamiga - that score could win the round, you're now #1.

Thanks Graham; I know it's seems a bit late in the day but with still two weeks to go I think its worth doing. At least with a break coming up you get to skip the compo headaches for a couple of weeks. As soon as the leaderboard changes with the new order (so I can see what is heck is going on), I'll have another few goes next week. Getting to level 12 with sub 500k scores is going to be a nightmare but I'm willing to give it my best shot.

Ahh there seems to be now 2 scoring methods here, I'm confused .
I upped my score some, managing to complete the game! The last boss was a bastard also, but got it in the end

12,000,000 - 366,394 = 11,633,606

Congrats beating the game Bamiga
Final boss Draxos beat me down like a dog..

Surely completing the game will score an extra million?
