Alternative to Filemaster
Been using Filemaster 2.2 for as long as I can remember, but it cant handle really long filenames, Amiga hangs.
Is there another low memory usage alternative? |

Maybe Toni can build a bug-fixed version, if he still has the sources???
But have you seen NewFilemaster? Last edited by mark_k; 16 September 2016 at 23:50. |

I like using Filer. You'll find it on Aminet.

Anybody has a screenshot of Filemaster?
Personally I use Dirwork. It's old as fuck but serves my purposes right. |

I used to use Filemaster 2 a lot in the 90s, but the way it copies files is horrible.

Directory Opus 5 can be setup to work like all those dual pane file managers, but it takes some work...
Edit: Just read 'low memory alternative' |

I've used DiskMaster2 since it was given away on the cover of Amiga Format Does everything I need it to.

Disk master II is the best. Easy to create new buttons to suit your needs too... just need to play with the script config. Very easy.

I think that OFS/FFS doesn't support those very long file names, thus most programs were not designed to handle them either, despite the fact that newer file systems like SFS and PFS can handle it?

If I put a file with such a long name in a FAT32 volume on my Amiga, I get the same issue on DirWork. it works fine from CLI, but not DirWork. Seems to be something about the amount of characters allocated to fit in the display of the window. Not sure. but it gives a Recoverable Alert every time you click on one. [edit] I guess we said basically the same, sorry, haha. |

I usually use 'SID' but it crashes on long file names...
If I know I am going to hit some I will use 'D-Opus 4.16' or 'Show All' in the Workbench. |

Readme of the newest version of Filemaster says that it supports long filenames but I don`t know if it works. This version is still in development, so it might be worth to ask the author. |

I'm using it right now under FFS, though, on an A1200 and it has no problems seeing TOSEC files (complete with long filenames) on zip disks formatted with FAT32. Of course, when I copy TOSEC files from zip to HD the filenames are truncated as FFS restricts filenames to 31 characters. Exactly.....so use of file managers developed before the release of PFS/SFS (mid-to-late 90s) should generally be avoided under OFS/FFS in that instance. |
