fan permanently running during emulation

The fan of my notebook (windows 11) starts running at low frequency shortly after the emulation in winuae (latest version, 32 and also 64 bit) is being started. When I return to the winuae control screen via hitting F12 everything calms down and the fan stops after a couple of seconds. What is happening here? And is there are a way to run the emulation without this permanent and somewhat annoying fan activity?

P.S.: Settings in winuae are standard with emulation of A500 / cycle excact.

Hopefully someone can help.

I expect the full cycle exact emulation just requires a lot more horsepower than a less strict/compatible one.

I didn't notice this, so i am not sure if this happen also with other version of WinUAE

But with the last 5.2 it seems fan is running during emulation

Can someone else confirm this ?

I have this even on older versions and under wine where the thermal management is nothing to do with windows.

Cycle exact A500 is likely significantly more demanding than JIT / RTG configuration.

On my Ryzen 7 CPU WinUAE 5.2.0 in A500 cycle exact mode uses between 0 and 3 percent and my fan doesn't spin up at all.

It probably isn't emulation directly. Do you get same CPU usage if you disable cycle-exact? It might be caused by weird sound driver or forced GPU vsync. (and some notebooks simply keep fan running as long as CPU is not idle enough)

btw, important bit is CPU mode: approximate (including CE) or fastest possible. Fastest possible = uses single CPU core 100% all the time. (unless CPU idle is adjusted)

i don't know if it working in this way. It works like PC with idle state, but you have to configure WinUAE for that.

With Cycle Exact or cpu emulation like A500/A1200, cpu usage is 0% and so is very silent.
If you change this configuration, cpu usage change in base you want. Generally when you set cpuspeed at "maximum" cpu usage is 100% both in idle both running application or games.

If you in WinUAE set "idle" at 90% and cpuspeed at maximun, WinUAE with normal use is in idle (cpu usage at 10%) and so your fan is very silent, but when it run some application or games that require full speed, emulation run at 100%, but as soon as you exit from that application, you cpu use return at 10%.

The only thing is that i have DSOUND instead of WASAPI as sound driver

But i tried with WASAPI also and results are the same

You can check used cpu% easily when in windowed mode.
If this is high, then look at cpu settings in emulation ; you may wish to play with "idle" setting. You may also have a look at the Filter page : some filters can eat a great deal of cpu power.
Else, there can exist programs in windows side to control the power plan and the fan curve.

Thanks for the replies. Good to hear I am not the only one with that fan issue.

@meynaf
Used cpu% displayed at bottom in windowed mode isn't high

...but CPU usage (%) and speed (frequency) (as viewed from task manager / performance) go up significantly as soon as emulation is being run.

Could the tool BES (cpu throttler) be worth a try?

So cpu% indicated by Winuae is low but cpu% indicated by task manager is high ?

So you want the fan not running even if there is load on the CPU?

Not sure if that has changed since Windows 7 (last notebook I was using was running that), but you can control fan speed / behaviour in the energy-saving profile directly in Windows. The fan is not under control by WinUAE at all.

Yep...

and when I reduce the max. performance cpu% step by step in the advanced power savings settings of windows11 the cpu% value in the task manager goes down and the fan stops running at a certain value while the cpu% value at the bottom of the winuae window(ed) goes up (markedly).

With my former antique 32bit notebook which ran a rather old version of winuae I did not have this fan trouble.

If cpu% given by Winuae is low but task manager says it's high, then something else must be eating cpu time...
