Trying to install a hard drive in A600?

Hi,Can anyone help me on how to install a 2.5" hd in my A600?
I have attached the 2.5" hd which is 250mb in the A600 and i am trying to prep the hd with the install disk from workbench 2.0
When i try to prep the hd it says this will low-level format your hd (scsi unit 0) but when i choose yes it then starts reading from filerepscript
prod prep 2.31
opened unti 0
unit is not a disk (type 7)
unable to setup drive

unable to open scsi unit 0.
please check your hardware and try again.

Can anyone tell me what is the best prep/format software to use for installing a hd on an A600 or why does the install disk 2.0 state above?

Any help appreciated

NO!
dont low-level format the disk!!!!

Just go straight to the other step, I think this is how I did it all the times, but it's not recommendable to lowlevel format it!

My understanding is that low level formatting should only be used on SCSI drives (not IDE)

Yes, you don't need to lowlevel. Just define the drive, partition, save, then reboot and format. If the drive is questionable then you can do the verify but it's not normally needed.

Hi,Thanks guys for your help I am not that good at upgrading the A600 and i am still having some difficulties in getting the hd installed and ready for workbench.I am fine with A1200's as they seem more user friendly with upgrading etc...
I would like a step by step guide if possible as to start me off with getting the hd recognized and ready for partitioning.I am booting the A600 with the install disk and the only thing i can use is the hd tool box in tools.Once i have double clicked the hd tool box the hd flashes and a screen appears (hard drives in system) under interface is scsi and under address is 0 and under lun is 0.Then under status is unknown.
The only thing i can click on is change drive type. There is scsi or xt and the only thing i can do is click on define new drive type.I have tried this and named the drive Amiga and saved but not sure what to do now so i have deleted the drive Amiga and will start again but with help from someone step by step.Once i have the drive recognized i can then work the rest out really

Cheers P

Try using HDInstTools from Aminet, It helped me recognise a drive that HDToolbox wouldnt.

Also it will by default launch in german so hit the menus at the top to find the language settings...

But then again things may be different for an IDE drive... very different...

I had a HD that gave the number '7' error. No amount of work got it to be recognised. It was a Seagate drive.

Hi Peanutuk,I have never used an hd in the A600 before mainly because i have always used A1200's but the 2.5" hd i am trying to use in the A600 is taken from an A1200.I have a very good hard drive prep/format program which i use on the A1200's but it requires 3.1 roms.I was going to get a 3.1 rom for the A600 and then try again but i am slowly loosing my patience and enthusiasm (forgive my spelling) I never did like the A600's they seem so limited as to what you can do oppose to the A1200.
I have seen that site were this guy has upgraded the A600 with an opollo accelerator etc...which does look and seem nice but i like the A1200's more.
I will try the hd inst tool suggested by T Hairy Booston if all fails i will give it up as a bad job

Errrrr.... the IDE interfaces are almost, if not, equal, and HDToolbox is almost, if not, the same on WB2.0 and WB3.0, so I don't see what's the big difference you talk about.

If you feel more comfortable on the 1200 with that program you mention insert the drive in it, prepare it and then insert it back in your a600, nobig deal.

Hi Akira sounds good to me So if i put the 2.5" hd in the A1200 and prep/format it i can then transfer workbench 2.0 on to it then simply put the hd in the A600?
If that is what you mean then yes that should work I will try it now!
If possible can you give me the links for aminet and back to roots.I can't seem to find it on google apart from websites not existing anymore

Cheers
Oh and the a600 vers a1200 well i have run in to a few problems when trying stuff on the a600 but when using the a1200 things work str8 away? I dug out my old parallel network kit and tried to use that on the a600 and could not get a connection but as soon as i used it on the a1200 it worked? The hd thing is a baffling one but as you mentioned i will set it up on the a1200 and transfer the hd to the a600 I had to find the workbench 2.0 disks in adf form as i did not have wb 2.0 and that was a right pain expecially when i could not get them back to disk with using the a600.As you know you can't install wb 3.1 on the a600 without a load of messing about i just wanted a str8 forward install of wb 2.0 on a hd just using a 600 and a pc. Oh well!

the only aminet mirror that still seems to be working is the german one, http://ftp.uni-paderborn.de/aminet/
www.back2rots.org be the other link

I don't understand your A600 problems, i never had them myself, and everything that works regarding this subject in my A1200 works as well in my A600

Thanks for the links
I am going to leave the a600 for a while until i can get a 3.1 rom off ebay.I have been doing a big search on the a600 and hard drives or i should say ide.It seems that some a600's had a problem with older/buggy roms and no matter what i do i can not get the hd taken from an a1200 to work in my a600 I will fit a 3.1 rom and use my hd prep/format program i have which does require kickstart v3.0 ?

You must have a case of very bad luck, for my A600 works perfectly with HDs, and it's 2.05. I think there were some VERY early A600s with problems witrh certain sizes of HDs, this could be your case but I am not sure if a ROM change will fix the problem, please get more information before purchasing something you don't need (coz 3.1 in a 600 is pretty useless, moreso if you already have a 1200!)
