Difference between .rdf and .hdf

Can someone please explain to me what the difference between .rdf and .hdf is? Sorry, probably a stupid question.

This is just my best guess. HDF is a hardfile of a single partition. RDF is a hardfile with RDB and the capability of having more than one partition.

Probably. WinUAE won't care (much) about extensions, contents matter.
