US BBS's from the Early 90's

Just curious what U.S. BBS's people remember from the late 80's and Early 90's.

Some favorites of mine were.

Danse Macabre sysop:Nosferatu
Martyrium sysop:Wintermute
Link to Perfection sysop:Waremonger
Ice Station Zebra sysop:Professor
End of the World sysop:Laviathon
Apocalypse sysop:P.O.W.

There were a ton more. It was pretty interesting to watch the BBS scene evolve during that time. BBS's that were very extremely popular in the late 80's pretty much dropped off the face of the planet unless they went multinode.

yeah mate i used to call a few baords around the globe from Aussie land .. some were Ice station Zebra it was one of the groups named Nemesis bbs's and also used to call Hangar 18 bbs sysop was called Flyboy .. he was a pilot obviously .. was a good bloke too.

The only way to get on most of the so called ELITE boards in the states, you had to be invited to join by another member or pay for leech accounts which lamers did.. lol

i was a modem trader calling up to 10 boards a day worldwide..

I was on all of them

Enterprise was a nice one, Danse Macabre, didn't have a lot of time for that board.

Andeveron on End of the World was a good guy, as was Big Boss.

Those were the days.... sigh!

My favorite board was Death Row (might still be around, even today!!! fook!). I used to get on Sepultura a lot because it was local and the Black Panther (RIP dude! ) was a really nice guy.

Enterprise was funny. Wasn't that the CNet/3 with the /X emulator?

Heh.. Galahad and I were quite frequent callers
I (and I`m sure Galahad did as well) had leech accounts across all the main boards, and I also coded quite a few of the top /X utils of the time with Mack Lifeguard, so everyone knew me. I also made an Arexx compiler which all the /X coders loved, so they didn't get their code ripped (at least no by lamers anyway)..

... those were the days I can tell you...

Hah. I didn't have leech anywhere until the N64 days. I had to strugle with a ratio like the rest of the lamers. That or most major stuff eventually got to my BBS.

BTW, how did that Arexx compiler work? I thought Arexx had to be interpreted.

Yeah i had a Hst as well cost me a fortune too .. back then to get a 14.4k dual standard Hst modem from U.s. Robotics cost $1000 to get into Australia after import taxes etc .. only way round that was to get a mate to send u one so u didnt pay extra import tax or card it ... lol
funny how after 15 years the same modem would be worth $10 nowadays.

I could never afford one of those fancy HST/DS jobbies. Funny that a few months ago my work was tossing out 6 BRAND NEW V.everythings.

That would be a BBS called Nirvana. I used to call that along with many other boards around the world, although I always used to get really bad connections to it when using BB. Another great board was Edge of Insanity run by Warduke which later renamed to Land of Confusion and moved over to Console (SNES/Genesis).

Also, very nice to see Reeet-Mon on here. Centrum was another great bbs back in the days.

I know for sure I used to call 79th Trac.. That was probably the main one I visited, the sysop there was real cool. I was never in any groups, paying for calls, and nothing good local (well one local board was huge, but rarely new). Anyways, it wasn't easy to keep up and keep a ratio going (and damned if I was going to pay a bbs) The guy at 79th Trac didn't seem real hung up about credit ratios and if I remember chatted here and there. I was able to trade between that and a few others here and there, mainly for AGA stuff. (Not sure if it was him or some other sysop, but they went on and on about some terrible car accident they were in, and could barely see the screen and I was thinking.. Man, just go to bed, but I knew the guy was having fun chatting and stuff.. I digress. heh)

Looking at that old list of boards, and some ring a bell.. But could be ones I called a few times but rarely had something new enough.. 11th Hour, Skull Buggery, Sepultura.. Good times, loved getting new AGA stuff to see how everything was progressing.. (but sure sucked getting something that was just AGA-fixed or some of the CD32 rips..)
