Project Update:

Matt has been doing a fantastic job with the 68k core and has found some bugs in the underlying DosBox code, basically it's coded to work for x86 only. Obviously it's not meant to only work for x86, the underlying DosBox code is wrong.

It's going to be very hard for him to code around these bugs so he's going to raise this with the DosBox developers to see if we can get them to fix their code instead.

This project is now on-hold as I can't do anything else with it to make it faster and it will not be usable on real hardware without a working 68k core.

Hopefully we'll hear something soon.

I suggest that anyone who's interested in seeing DosBox on 68k, keep a close eye on this thread and maybe give it the odd bump if it needs it.

@prowler

Pardon?
I didnt even begin to suggest that there was any sort of misinterperation with what Ive written above, but rather elaborated on what Ive said earlier in *this* thread. What youve quoted was from a completely different thread.

Novacoder asked if I attend any local amiga user group meetings, I explained why I dont. Pretty simple and straight forward. Not argumentative, nor antagonistic, just simple truth.

Doesnt stop what youve quoted from me here being true though,.... sometimes a lack of tone and/or infliction does lead to misunderstandings.

Err,.... Sorry, 'bout That.

Im not really sure where to post this, so feel free to move it to a more appropriate forum if need be.

I just wanted to apologize to anyone involved for the tone of some of my posts in the last few days.
Ive been overstressed, and over-tired, plus battling with some health issues for a while now, and this doesnt always bring out the best in me. All I can do on those occasions, when I think its warranted, is to apologize.
Ironically I'd decided to put all other computer stuff on hold recently and just have fun with my classic amiga for a while as a type of "therapy". So far this hasnt really gone to plan

I enjoy my amiga hobby, and dont really want to alienate other like minded people, which really I think Ive been doing by degrees for a while now.

@fishyfish: That's better.

I've moved your above post from its own thread. Your explanation and apology are accepted, and I hope you are soon back to health.

Needs lots of work to get it running well on AGA but at least it's a start.

Not sure how fast I can make it yet, I'm thinking of getting a talented assembler coder to knock up a 68k core which should help.

Don't expect a playable BETA anytime soon, I'm time poor with lots of interesting AGA projects to work on
Lol!! An emulator within another emulator running a pc game! What else are we gonna see?!
Excellent!

Hopefully we'll see a DOS game running in AGA using dynamically generated 68k instructions

A Windows 9x emulator for PPC processors perhaps ? :-)

@NovaCoder keep up the good work :-)
It's been quite a while since I've seen DOS games running on a CRT monitor :-)
will there be any support for RTG ?

Matt (the guy developing the core) doesn't have AGA so I guess I'll have to do an RTG version for him

Would be like a big bang, after years were were able to play Commander Keen on the A1200.

Matt is still coding away on the dyna core and making progress, he actually got the command prompt to appear for the first time yesterday.

He's now able to generate test-builds himself (doesn't have to wait for me) so hopefully this will speed up development of the core.

My biggest dream is to run Ultima 7 in good frame rate in my A1200 AGA or even martian dreams or savage empire.

However, the largest dream of mine is to run one single MMORPG game in my A1200 but alas all the graphical ONLINE rpg games require minimum 500 Mhz with 128 MB of RAM...specs way far for the A1200 to achieve.

Project Update:

Sorry to say the only update I can give is that nothing is happening with this project.

I stopped working on it after I proved that without some clever assembler work to optimize the 'virtual' x86 CPU it will be too slow to be of any use on real hardware.

I was aiming for mid-to-high end 386sx performance (using an overclocked 060) but on my machine the fastest I can get it to run is more like a slow 286

If anyone manages to develop a working 68k asm core then it will be hardly any effort for me to finish porting this project (hint).

Sorry to hear about this but thanks to yourself and Matt for the big effort anyway and, who knows, might not be the last we've heard of AmigaDosBox!

I just uploaded my WIP to AmiNet if anyone wants it, it seems pretty much complete but way too slow to use on real hardware (WinUAE only).

The only use on real HW that I can think of is that it makes a nice screen saver

Someone just used this to boot up Windows95 under WinUAE, crazy stuff

I'm bumping this thread because I would like to do more DOSbox on my classic equipment. And running Windows 95 is pretty funny.
