Is all dumping done now exclusively with Kyroflux?
I don't have a Kyroflux nor will I buy one but I found some disks that I thought might be nice to have imaged.
I remember before I used the CAPS tool to dump them, is that still valid? |

My understanding is that if you have a KryoFlux, then it will do everything the CAPS dumping tools do and more.
However, if you don't have a KryoFlux, then CAPS tools dumps are still valid. |

These are not absolute rarities though so they may not be needed, but I think I do have some alternate versions. Will give it a try when I get back home!

Silly question (and I have searched but keep getting re-directed to Kryoflux by some means or another), but what is this CAPS tool and can it be run on an original Amiga to dump images or does it require specialised hardware?

CAPS Tool is the Amiga dumping solution before Kryoflux was produced, so you can still dump images with CAPS Tool on a real Amiga and submit them, the only caveat is you need a 68020 or higher CPU to be able to dump images.

Can't this tool still be downloaded from the SPS website?

It will not be of any use to you as the image files it generates can only be used to create IPFs with another software (not available to the general public).

I would support CT-dumped image files too, if there were any documentation or open reference implementations for the format.
Anyone seriously enough into dumping/analysing to get into mfmparse themselves should seriously consider getting a Kryoflux though. It's awesome! |

That would be putting work into a dead horse... We've decided to let it rot - there is so much else we would like to do. The old capture tool is only supported for legacy reasons, so we encourage everyone to go with stream.

I know i can't make an IPF, i was hoping I could submit my output from the caps tool to the SPS team. So I assume then that I was right? That without a Kyroflux I cannot contribute to software preservation anymore? That's quite sad.

My understanding is that it is still an accepted way to create dumps for submission to SPS.

Edit: The best drives to use have a cast chassis, not a sheet metal chassis, and Sony drives are particularly good. |

I use a couple of Sony MPF920-E's, dumped hundreds of disks with them and they are on the list of drives confirmed working 100% with Kryoflux

@mr.vince
Why not replying to the first post?(from a SPS-team member) Would be interesting, if the old tool is still a valid tool for dumping. |

I assumed that not objecting to those that said it still is meant it is still ok to do so.
While we recommend KryoFlux for certain protections because of the resolution (it will read nearly faulty disks better), the classic dumping tool still works. |
