This is old news because Warner Bros. effectively killed HD-DVD on the 4th January.

True, and so, RIP HD-DVD (2006-2008).

A shame, as I was hoping to get a HD DVD very soon.

Betamax loses again (for those that remember!) ;/

I wonder if Microsoft will bring out a blu-ray add-on for the XBox 360?

But Betamax was Sony, so surely in this case 'Betamax' won?!

Are you aware that Betamax - although a running joke of Married with Children - was the technically superior format?

This time the better format wins. Miracles can happen...

It was a totally unecessary format war, Toshiba and Sony should know better. All they achieved was to dilute and ensure both formats didn't get the start that DVD had.

Looks like that.

But for video: I guess Video 2000 was much better than VHS or Betamax.

Philips doesn't allowed o movies, this fault killed the system VERY fast.

BD is definitely the better format. I always supported it.

Until I found two things (verify please): (1) BD doesn't (yet) use a better compression algorithm than HD-DVD, (2) the worse - BD is much much much more tied to stupid security and locking mechanisms... hate this stuff.

I was referring to the fact that the betamax was a better product, regardless of who manufactured it, and in it's day, was recognized as a better machine than VHS or Video 2000.

Whether Sony make the Blu-Ray or not, I 'really' didn't want to buy one of them.

The market have chosen this because of the amount of units sold due to the PS3, and yet PS3s are generally not going to be based in the main living room where the whole family can watch. Short-sighted, in my opinion, but until something better comes along, I suppose it will have to be Blu-ray

You've forgotten about the delivery medium that trounces both. There's no restrictive DRM or format wars. BitTorrent FTW!

jfyi: the BD playback software in PS3 has been updated already to profile 1.1.

Most players have upgradeable firmware, it'a a completely different matter if the manufacturer releases an update or not.
