A500 black screen without trapdoor ram

Hello all, I have this problem. I have an Amiga 500 with trapdoor ram expansion It works with the ram expansion in place but when I turn the ram expansion off or remove it and try too use the machine it just shows a black screen and does not try to load from disk.
Can anyone throw some light on this problem for me?
Thank you

Load the workbench when expansion is in place and type avail in shell to see how much there is memory.

On board (Chip RAM) error would cause green screen at boot.

Have you opened the case and checked for possible weird modifications?
