Some crappy racing game on the BBC Micro at school that I wrote myself, I think. Inspired from a battered copy of "how to program in BASIC" I found in the school library no doubt.

First "proper" game was probably Batman on the A500. It was a bit of a leap.

The first computer game I have ever played was on a friend's computer (I didn't have one myself back then) and it was "Mandragore" on the Thomson MO5:

It was the first French role playing game (highly influenced by Ultima 3) although it looks primitive and ugly nowadays, back then it was gold in bars and we had a lot of fun playing it.

Atari2600 but 1st actual computer i owned of my own was a Commodore +4 with around 20 games for it, played it a LOT and didnt even realise at the time it was meant to be kinda the replacement for the C64 lol , but the C64 was way superior.

1st game i played on the system was called Fire Ant , loved it at the time.

It would have to be either Munchkin or Stone Sling on a Philips Videopac G7000 at a classmates house in '81-82.

Written by Colin "Fungus the Bogeyman" Dooley , the only guy at Gremling Graphics who bothered to code properly to the MSX instead of doing just lazy ZX Spectrum ports. There's another MSX game by him called "Desolator" that still ranks to me as one of the best home Defender clones ever.

I'll have to check that out. Colin originally wrote valkyr for the Jupiter Ace computer. Looks more or less the same but was black and white. I also doubt it has the vary of sound effects in the msx version.

My Hero was a really weird game, and felt too... simplistic for a Master System game. It was an arcade game by Coreland who did some really weird games.
And I actually own a cart of it For some weird reason the game was sold as "Gang's Fighter" here in Brazil, but only on cover and cart labels. Turn on the game and "My Hero" is written on the title screen.

My Hero's a great game. One of my favourites on the Master System. I do obviously agree that it's simplistic compared to many of the other games on the system.

Not sure if it was the first but it's the first i can remember and that was the awesome Ledgeman on the BBC Micro (at school). Still remember hearing that that short A-Team theme tune loop long after i'd stopped playing it... like a musical version of the Tetris effect

Well the first system we owned would have been the Phillips G7000 (aka Magnavox Odyssey²).

MY eldest sister purchased it for us but from Kuwait, so it was NTSC.

So...... given we had dial tune TV's back then, we "could" tune in the colour TV in the sitting room, but to get a stable (ish) image the tuning was such that we had no sound.

To get sound, we had to use the black and white TV.

So MOST of my time on our Phillips G7000 was spent playing on a black and white portable TV.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because while we had several games on the G7000, the one that stands out, and so I'll declare it as my "first game" was "Munchkin".

Munchkin was a pacman clone, with a few key points of difference.

1) The dots MOVE...and the less dots, the faster they move.
2) The Ghost "home" rotates, changing where they will emerge from
3) There are several different mazes AND....
4) You could CREATE your own Maze.

But what was a real issue for me was...when the ghosts were vulnerable, the only indication was, they would flash between 2 colours. There was no other visual clue and no audio clue at all.

And I clearly recall, at least one of the ghosts didn't have enough of a contrast between the 2 colours, for the change to be noticeable on my black and white TV screen. lol

So "chomping" was a risky business.

But that said, I spent HOURS on it. I LOVED it!

And I programmed a maze which gave the player a smooth flow through the level.
The game would get faster with each level clearing. But with my special maze, I could clear level after level. The speed increase got so high, that the G7000 would just make the ghosts go side to side in 1 corner as if trapped lol.

I was about 8 years old.

I look forward to trying to re-create that maze from memory if I can one day, if I get my hands on a G7000 and a copy of the game.

Now oddly I recall it having 4 portals, 2 on each side. Perhaps a wrong memory, or perhaps that was a certain maze "type".

I clearly recall my "special maze" split the screen into quadrants.

I do recall the player could enter the rotating ghost home (risky), so perhaps that's how I got from quadrant to quadrant. I'd have to play it on the metal. I'm sure it will all come back that day.

oooh Just found that Steve Benway (one of my favorite YouTubers) has done a video on it.

A friend of mine had the Phillips G7000, I distinctly remember the beeping sounds made by a game called Freedom Fighters. My Dad also fixed my friend's system because the power supply in it was buzzing more than usual.

Atari Pong from the 70's However, being rather young at the time, Nintendo Duck Hunt with the Zapper became my favourite of the early gadget games

Underwater Attack. Was a Centipede variant that came free with BBC Master Compact computer on the welcome disk.

It played well but it became amazing because it saved highscores so all my family was competing against each other.
