Is there a guide to remapping joystick buttons?

The gamepad is correctly detected and works fine, but the Remap button under joy2 in Game Ports is grayed out, and some Input > Remap changes don't stick, others do.

Attached Game Ports settings.

If this is a bug I could provide log zip?

1. Game ports tab
2. select "Custom 1:" and not your detected joypad
3. Remap/Test

I... should not select the joy2 device to use in the dropdown? Wouldn't have guessed in a million years! It works, thanks

The Game Ports Remap doesn't allow mapping a button to up (jump) while keeping up for secondary actions, but Custom also fixes the Remap in the Input panel, so... excellent

Yep, Custom mapping works great and fast. Though Toni should make it more "visible" in the GUI. Nobody would look for "Custom 1:" first.

Actually for platformers I recommend the Game Ports Remap for gamepads.

As written it will remove the Up trigger completely, but in doing so prevents mistriggers on gamepads when turn-jumping.

This was for remapping Up to a button and Fire to a nearer button than X, so remapping is best done per game type.

How would you make it more visible?

Remap-button could automatically select free custom slot and copy defaults from currently selected device but it can be also confusing..

Mmh, i thought more of an extra GUI button for "Custom Joypad/Joystick Remapping". At least for the first slot.

Sounds like useless extra step and waste of GUI space.

But it could stop questions like Photons. I'm pretty sure he isn't the last person who will asking that here.

Maybe a drop down inside the normal Remap/Test button? With Mouse right click for "Custom"?

I think just some labels above dropdowns will be great So we know what to call them and know what they select. I think most if not all settings panels have unnamed dropdowns.

The device appeared as usb gamepad in that dropdown (and also everything else connected to my USB hub), so I thought this was for selecting which device to use and this was the one setting I should keep as is and never change.

I can't "limit" GUI remap to (obviously simple) single device because remapping is not device specific, _any_ device event can be mapped to selected slot, mix different game controllers and keyboard(s) keys is fully supported.

This "complexity" is difficult to show in GUI without confusing users even more...
