I already did tests on my own files. Lha is better. Now I am going to do tests on your files and show you that lha is better even on your files.

I can't help feeling this is all a tad off-topic? All Picard asked for was an Amiga version of Zip and asked if there were any other archivers on the Amiga. So why has it descended into a silly "my archiver is better than yours" argument?

Anyway, I was reading the webpage of the maintainer of Amiga zip, Paul Kienitz, and he's certainly a huge Amiga fan. http://www.paulkienitz.net/amiga.html |

@Graham
Because the very first post says "lha...kind of suck"s which according to certain moderators is "software bashing" and not allowed. Yet strangely it was allowed. |

Well, I don't think we argue here about whose archiver is better. I think this is just a debate. For example, I am curious why StrategyGamer claims that he manages to pack files more efficiently with LhA than with Zip. If you like, you can move some of our posts to a new thread called "LhA vs Zip". The thread might be quite cognitive.

Just to add fuel to the fire, on an A600 with a 68000 cpu, I tested the most recent Zip, LHA, and LZX all in their standard compression configs.
LZX was by far the best - much faster and a better compression ratio! LZX for the win! Last edited by Bloodwych; 07 December 2007 at 20:08. |

Since we are comparing filesizes I have commanded ZIP and LHA to use their best compression methods. This means all my zip files are smaller than mailman's zip files.
I ALWAYS use the -r recursive command when making archives. I ALWAYS use the best compression available. Code:
; Here is the script used to conduct the test ; Place the test files in T: ; Be careful that only the test files are in T: and not any others. lha a -rade -3 -v0 ram:XM.WeirdOfAchron.lha t:XM.WeirdOfAchron lha a -rade -3 -v0 ram:FFmpegPPC.lha t:FFmpegPPC lha a -rade -3 -v0 ram:DBM.WcManager.lha t:DBM.WcManager2 lha a -rade -3 -v0 ram:AEROSMITH.iff.lha t:AEROSMITH.iff lha a -rade -3 -v0 ram:09.DAT.lha t:09.DAT zip -R -9 ram:XM.WeirdOfAchron.zip t:XM.WeirdOfAchron zip -R -9 ram:FFmpegPPC.zip t:FFmpegPPC zip -R -9 ram:DBM.WcManager.zip t:DBM.WcManager2 zip -R -9 ram:AEROSMITH.iff.zip t:AEROSMITH.iff zip -R -9 ram:09.DAT.zip t:09.DAT ; Test all files in 1 archive lha a -rade -3 -v0 ram:Everything.lha t:#? zip -R -9 ram:Everything.zip t:#?
