Multi-quoting

Nothing major, this one, but I have realised that recently there have been more people who quote multiple posts but do a seperate reply for each one, which leads to two, three or even more successive posts from the same member, when it is totally unnecessary to do so. I know plenty of people use the multiquote feature, so (obviously) multiple posts can be quoted in one reply, but it seems that there also many members who aren't aware of this feature, or don't know how to use it properly. So for these people here's how you use it:

Click on the multiquote button next to the ordinary "quote" button:

This will highlight it. Now do the same for every post you wish to quote, then hit "Post reply", and all the posts you clicked the multiquote button for should come up in the reply box.

Simple as that. I have to say I've been getting a little fed up by the number of multiple posts I've seen recently, I'm sure people have noticed I've been merging more posts recently but if they're all in one post it's easier to read and follow and doesn't clog the thread up as much.

I do realise that sometimes there are good reasons for making multiple posts and I understand that and won't touch them, but the majority of them are just short, simple replies to posts that could all easily go in one post so if more members could make the effort to use the feature properly then that would be very helpful After all that's what it's there for! No-one will get in trouble if they don't but it will preserve my sanity and that can only be a good thing

Thanks for reading and I'm sure you all think I'm nuts but there you go

Thanks for the (lenghty ) explanation Graham I'm sure this will come in handy for the members here that weren't aware of this feature yet

Thanks Graham,

I've often wondered what the multiple quote feature actually did, but whenever I've clicked it, the response has apparently been so slow that I've given up.

Up to now, I've done this instead by clicking the quote icon for each of the posts I wanted to quote and then copying a set of them into a single reply, editing each one as necessary.

I can now see what I was doing wrong. Next time I try the 'shortcut' multiple quote feature, I'll use the 'correct' method.

Just seen that AmiBay has an auto-merge feature. It runs on vBulletin 3.8.4 though, so not sure if that is compatible with our 3.7.0 version.

Anyway, have a look here : http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?p=79324#post79324 (I wanted to cheat and they don't let me )

It's good in theory but I think it could be a problem when people intentionally use multiple posts for different reasons (i.e. like Guess The Screenshot).

(Can't look at that link, I'm not a member at AmiBay)

Of course there have to be variables for the time and stuff, but I think it could be worth to have a look.

Here's a picture for all you non-AmiBayers :

LMAO!! more like end of the week!

Auto merge is pretty funky, BUT if you are changing a point or discussion its pretty anyoing as it groups all your posts to the same post.

I will say the Multi-Quote is most certainly the Trollers Choice... I use it as often as I can =D

- although you are only limmited to multi-quote that page, if there was post you wanted to quote on a previous page ya kinda screwed

Generally If I need to do somthing like that I hit the quote button and then highlight & copy, then the back button, then the next page button, tap on the multi quote and hit the quote button on the last quotable item - past the first lot at the begiing, and then... I unleash the multi-quoting fury! by pressing post =)

I was curious about this so I tried it. You can indeed use multi-quote over different pages.

Yep, I have been doing it for a while now!

You can even import quotes form other threads by opening another browser window and using cut and paste (though you may need to switch editor mode to import smilies intact ).

For some reason I just copy/paste what I want to quote and add the tags myself.

Never use the quote or multi-quote functions

Then please consider using them in future.

Until then, your posts aren't as useful as they might otherwise be.

Presently, other users can't easily find the posts you are quoting from in order to read them in their proper context. This is particularly annoying if you are quoting posts from another thread.

I understand now how it is possible to use multi quote, click a few different posts for quoting at once. Probably would have to edit further to remove what isn't needed, like do with normal quote.

Problem when i press the multi quote button, the quote goes straight to the message quick reply box. Maybe no way to use multi quote for me, also tried clicking advance button next to post quick reply, then it loses all buttons on posts. Maybe this is why forum users don't use the multi quote
