I'm making a top down racer, styled on Amiga top down racers. Main influence is Nitro and Hotrod plus some newer games too like Rush Rush Rally Racing and Retro Racing. Will be for PC and Android. Made in Gamemaker.

Here's a Youtube link to the game I am making, with the city level featured. It's going to be called Sneaky Ways as there are plenty of paths to choose. The game's about 6 months to 1 year away. The engine's mostly there but I am in the process of implementing powerups and obstacles - pass the bomb, exploding barrels, leaking barrels, jumps and flying powerups are some you can see in the video.

I think it's nice game, even unfinished - good mix of retro and more modern style. In Android version don't forget about 'pay to win'

Lots of great games mentioned but you missed LED storm - not necessarily the best top down racer game ever but particularly memorable to me for the great (as always) Tim Follin soundtrack.

Not really a fan of top down racers but ATR was the exception! Just seemed a fun and responsive game to play. Didn't really get on with Skidmarks etc.

Do like 1000 miglia (isometric 3d I guess??) on MAME as well!

Speaking of MAME (or NEO GEO), Thrash Rally is a great top down racer. [ Show youtube player ]

Slicks on Commodore 64 seems to have inspired Nitro to some extent, at least the city levels. Very playable. [ Show youtube player ]

I agreed with you. But then I decided to check the games credits. Nothing interesting but I also noticed the release dates. Apparently Slicks (1992) came after Nitro (1990):

yes indeed it does look good, it reminds me a little of Micro Machines in fact.

No Amiga version though?

As a multi-player game Super Skidmarks was one of the Amiga's very best in any genre - about the last Amiga game my PC/Playstation owning mates were interested in. I always loved Super Off-Road as a one-player game too. Preferred the first Supercars to the second though both were pretty good. Never played Roadkill, really ought to.
