refurbished A1200 from amigakit

Hi, I've come back to the Amiga scene after many years and am interested in the refurbished Amiga A1200 from amigakit, however I want the official original Commodore Amiga and not the Escom one. Are the refurbished Amiga A1200 units from Amigakit the original Commodore units or Escom? Many Thanks

Not sure why you wouldnt want an escom 1, but i think thats all they have (could be wrong though). I have to say, the refurbished Escom i got for 1 of my forum users was in mint condition, .

If you contact them as stated already, they will be able to help you further. They are really nice guys, , even nicer as they are based 5 mins drive from my works, .

I feel the same way as Van DenHawk. I would rather an original Commodore A1200 too, which is what i have always had since 1992 .. Although i would certainly settle for an Escom one if i really needed too.

Actually i am considering buying another one in case my current one dies which it is always a huge worry.

How much are the refurbished ones going for anyway?

£99 for a refurbished one I believe. £150 for a brand spanking new Escom jobbie.

Although if you're wanting a new one analogiccomputers on eBay sell brand new boxed one's for cheaper

Many games don't work in the FDD Escom although it can make a hardware modification if you are enough brave...

But don't the Escom ones have OS3.1 as standard, as opposed to 3.0 with the Commodore ones? Not that it makes a great deal of difference I guess, if you don't want to upgrade the OS.

Yeah the Escom jobbies came standard with 3.1. Whereas the C= spec 1200's come with 3.0 I've found one or two demos not liking 3.1 at all - Putty Squad being one of them

If the Escom A1200 is fitted with a hard drive, is it possible to play the games that don't work on it's floppy drive by first installing them on the hard drive and using whdload to play them from there?

@Van Dehawk

Welcome to the EAB, theres plenty of mischief to get up to around here

as you have surmised, the only problem is SOME disk based demo's and games wont work on an Escom based A1200 due to the floppy drive has been changed.

So as you say, WHDLoaded on the Hard disk... no problem, you can also get another internal floppy drive down the line or an external one , there is a project for WHDLoad Demo's not sure how thats going at the moment... must look into this...

The commodore logo on the A1200 is wired to the CPU to help it crash less often

Yes, from my experience the drive doesn't give a proper READY signal when it's up to speed. My trackloader didn't like it and just hung forever It's an easy fix to modify the mobo though... you can also mod the drive as well to work 'correctly' so no replacement parts are needed if you change it to Commodore spec.

Escom used PC HD drives because there were no more DD drives, right?

Quite possibly. It's been a while but IIRC it didn't like HD disks unless the HD hole was taped over - which would agree with your theory

Correct that they used PC HD, I think it was more to do with cost though.
I remember a friend of mine thinking his A1200 was faulty. My A1200 would play games yet his wouldn't with the same disks.

If i am not mistaken the PC 1.44 HD drives that were used in the ESCOM amiga, was a butchered form, (either by jumper setting or by wire routing, i am unsure as to which)

Amiga 1200 Refurbished or New old stock

Hi all.

Well I have been on the amigakit.com site too, and want to buy an Amiga 1200, but DAMN im confused.

What is the difference between A1200 Refurbished and New Old stock?

Refurbished is that the original Amiga 1200 manufactured by Commodore, and New Old Stock by Escom?
