THIS game has very poor graphics from an aesthetic point of view. The thing is that you fall in love with this game _in spite_ of the graphics, and after a while you think the powerups are cute and the barren landscapes make you feel like you're exploring a frontier and not just being presented something designed and polished and good looking that you can see was drawn for you. I can't explain it any better.

A grey ship with two colors. Caves with the same pattern on them, for 50 levels. Enemies that are always the same color and look like abstract cylinders with pins sticking out of them. Bullets are 1-pixel, white dots. Can it get any worse? Probably not. But it plays like an absolute dream.

In my opinion, Stephan Wenzler of Kingsoft is a genius for focusing on what's important to make a good game and totally ignore everything unimportant.

50 levels in perfect sequence to make a challenge, with powerups appearing on just the level where you need them. After a while you discover new game elements, like indestructible enemies and magnetic walls. He even made extra game modes, like split-screen racing and dogfights, which I had a lot of fun with together with my brother.

This game spawned a gazillion clones, and they all sucked. This is 2004 and I would gladly pay $50 for fifty new levels.

This thread is unfair.. it would be far more interesting if we mentioned ugly yet EXCELLENT games. There are tons of ugly & bad games to pick from.
I'd pick:

Manhunter New York & San Francisco http://hol.abime.net/?id=2403
They looked like 8-bit games, but they were fantastic adventures.

What about this? Oh my god what an ugly game! And very unplayable! Looks like an old Speccy game with more colours. Even think i was excited of the cover and bought it original! What a waste of money! I still have the box in my room. Next to Beast 2 original. (Also have the T-shirt!!)

i disagree. also double dragon was grand fun to me.

Alkis21: me too i think some of the best gaming moments i had on amiga were on games with ugly graphics or not coehrent visuals but tricky, smart and yelling at me: Duck Tales, Exterminator (not the bug killing one), Ghostbusters, Lupo Alberto, Legend of Valour, Sky or Die! etc.
But if you want to pick a ugly game by judging gameplay and all, well i think it's really a matter of personal attitudes. i cant remember now a really ugly game.

Guys you ain't seen nothing yet....
The games you listed are the essence of pure art and the heart of the universe compared to what follows here...

Here are some of my favourites, that both look and play and usually even sound dreadful to provide a truly synergistic experience.
Enjoy

Trivia: one of these titles had been hyped for months/years on a different platform until it finally came out on the miggy to shock many generations to come.

I used to have my list of these but luckily forgotten most of the entries, though some of them still haunt me ever since I dared to watch... Spooky.
KG may remember more.

I remember playing Vixen on my C64... it can't possibly be the game that was hyped, it sucked!

Wasn't Wild Streets Team 17's first game? It says "developer unknown" in the HOL.

@IFW. Don't leave us in suspense, which game was the mystery "hyped on alternate platform" jobbie then?

@JohnnyWalker. AFAIK, I believe "Full Contact", (or named something along those lines), was Team 17's first official release, it was a budget beat-em-up title as I recall.

I don't really remember but the first Team 17 game is probably Miami Chase, under the name Team 7.

As for one of the most overhyped yet alarmingly awful game, some hints:

Take a look at the second advert on the last link for the game, "listen" to the music of the finished product and try to tell exactly what part of the game sound needed a synth?

Okay it's from 1986 and all that, but that's ridiculous I've seen some early MS-DOS games that looked that bad, but not even the C64 had these ugly streched graphics

Indeed. Check out these links to se what a c64 can do:

Mayhem in Monsterland
Last Ninja 3

Click on the screen shot on the left to enlarge it. Of course these games are very pixelated, but the use of color and the design are very good. Not having a lot to work with is no excuse to make ugly graphics, and Brataccas is a prime example of how not to do it.

I've seen Mayhem in Monsterland before and it's a very impressive game on the C64 No wonder everybody votes it very high.
Also Ninja 3 is really great (like the other two). You're right that these two games show what the C64 was capable of

@Retro
Thanks for the welcome

I always thought Leaderboard looked pretty awful - considering they were just static screens:

http://hol.abime.net/843

And coming a close second must be Castlevania - remember this was 1990 - the year that brought us graphical masterpieces such as Turrican and Cadaver. How they thought it worthy of release is beyond me!

http://hol.abime.net/2953

(The NES version played and looked a lot better too)
