LCD Monitor

Hi all,
i recently changed my good old CRT for a Samsung LCD 740BF monitor.
I'm now working in 1280x1024 res. under window$ but i've got 2 problems in WinUAE (i'm generally using it with A500 config's file for games) :
  • I was using fullscreen mode 800x600, 100Hz(Pal) and vertical sync checked for good scrollings in games but now it's no more possible so what is the best result : should i keep 800x600 (with default frequency and vert sync OFF) or should i take 1280x1024 with Filter checked (null filter or OpenGL) ?
  • When i quit WinUAE, I sometimes have a black screen under windows with only the mouse visible that force me to manually reset my PC. I've got a 6800GT graphic card and i recently upgrade to 91.31 forceware it's a fact but i don't think it's the cause. Any Ideas ?
Thanks in advance.

YOu can't say your graphics card drivers are not the problem unless you have checked with anothe driver version!

I run in windowed mode tbh as it is easier (for me)

I dont think i'll come back to the previous drivers.
The black screen appears in fullscreen modes only and when i change the filters or the display settings. No problem with Windowed mode of course but they aren't very suitable with a 1280x1024 res.

I run 1280x1024 and have the window at 800x600 and i play games etc just fine.

You need to go back to an earlier or newer gfx card driver. Until you have done that Toni will not bother helping anywhere else as it might not be a winuae issue!

91.31 is the latest forceware version (june 2k6) perhaps i'll try with the previous one but that "black screen trouble" doesn't annoy me a lot.
I'll prefer answers for having smooth scrolling as before with my CRT'one

To get the smooth scrolling your LCD must sync to either 100hz or 50hz otherwise it aint gonna happen in a hurry!

I'm still using 84.50 or similar might be time to update

If you're willing to play games at NTSC speeds, then you can force WinUAE to update at 60Hz even in PAL-mode (the setting is right below the frameskip slider). I do this with demos and get perfectly smooth scrolling on my laptop (if I'm running stuff that's interlaced, I use normal line-mode with a 2x null vertical filter to get rid of the interlace combing, otherwise I use double line-mode with 1x null filter).

You mean the FPS slider ? but if you set to 60 you get perfectly smooth scrolling but it speeds up the sound as well.

Unfortunately the only way you are going to get things how you want is to either go back to a CRT that can sync to 50/100hz or get a TFT that can do so!!

Or you'll have to live with it i'm afraid to say!

Yes, and as far as I know there is no perfect solution for LCDs - either you use a display that can support 50Hz or a multiple, you speed up the emulation to 60Hz and deal with the incorrect speed, or you deal with the jerky scrolling.

The options have been put forth in front of you, and so it is now your choice which one works best.

Personally, being in the US, I'm used to 60Hz, and so it doesn't bother me so much.

Here's what worked for me...

My LCD is not supposed to be able to refresh at 50Hz according to the specs in the manual. However, adding a custom 1280x1024 res at 50Hz DOES work on my screen (for various reasons I'm not going to go into). You can do this either through the Nvidia drivers or something like Powerstrip.

Of course one of the filters will need to be used to make the image fill the screen. I also use bilinear filtering and scanlines for that authentic crappy tv image quality :P

Make sure vsync is checked and you should be good to go

I've compared the results with my real 1200 & 600 and it's pretty close (and I'm a fussy bastid)

Give it a try ... you never know
