Eek A1200 Dead!

I was chugging along quite nicely on wb 3.1 when all of a sudden the 1200 decided it wasn't playing anymore and promptly switched itself off

I borrowed a mates 1200 and checked psu floppy harddrive they all checked out fine...

What is does is when you switch the power on it (on my tv) switched over to AV selects RGB as normal then sits there, no kickstart screen is present, and i've swapped back to my ver 3.0 roms and they all check out.

I was just curious to know if anyone has any ideas on the matter, and if I'm being incrediably dumb and missed something simple.

It's a bog standard a1200 if you're asking

Thanks

Hmm, do the LEDs come on ?
Does the drive click ?
Maybe it is just the cable ? Or the video-connector has got bad solder joints ?
If you get the drive clicking and also the LEDs are on, then try hooking it up to the TV via RF-out.
If there is no drive clicking then there is something wrong with your Amiga.
Unfortunately the A-1200 is not easy to repair because of it's surface mounted chips

The Led's come on fine and the floppy drive accepts the floppy and clicks accordingly but doesn't attempt to read the disk.

I've tried the RF and also a standard composite cable to no avail, however just before powerdown it did garble the screen and did go very funny so i think you might be right Overdoc, it probably is a gfx problem.

I've had quite a few amiga's over the years however this is the first 1200 i've had and the first amiga that's died on me - so i havn't got the first clue on what i'm looking for.

a1200 newbie - i feel sick...... :laugh

Garble on screen is bad, methinks!
Are you sure the PSU is OK?

Unfortunately this doesn't sound like it was just a cable problem, then
Do both LEDs stay on or does the drive LED go out after powerup as normal ?
And since you said you already swapped PSU, drives and everything then I think it must be a chip problem....

But if you haven't done yet, then try powering the A-1200 up without drive and without HD, and use the PSU from your friend.

The actual drive light doesn't come on at all - on power up all you get is the magical 'click' and the power light.

I did what you suggested Overdoc, I ripped out all the drives and used my friends psu but the same thing happens.

Im a bit worried actually as the guy who had it before me said he ran it fine for 2yrs, no problems at all. All I have done since owning it is install 3.1 roms and a 2.5" hitatchi 1GB drive, however this has been running fine for a good 2 months now

Thanks for the continuing help by the way Overdoc.

Quick Question - I installed the 3.1 roms fine however I foolishly forgot which order the 3.0 roms were.

Could anyone clarify which way they are in terms numbers?

To make it simple on people i'll use the four digit number on the bottom.

Is it 9323 D or 9324 D at the top?

Thanks

Putting them in the wrong socket is not bad for the machine - it simply won't boot up.

Putting them in the wrong ORIENTATION, however, is bad.

The orientation is fine - I made SURE of that

However does this mean it doesnt matter which order they are in? or is there still a specific order.

Perhaps something went wrong there.

OK. ROM chip sockets are U6A (lower) and U6B (upper: toward ports at back of Amiga mobo).

3.0 ROM chips: 9323 D or 9324 D? Mine have the 4-digit number 9308 D on both chips. Here is the order, using a longer number as reference: 391523-01 into U6A, and 391524-01 into U6B.

The 3.1 ROMs need to go 391773-01 into U6A; 391774-01 into U6B.

The spare pinholes are to the left, with 3.0 and 3.1 ROMs.
