Can anyone identify this old CRT TV?

It's the one Andy Crane and Violet Berlin used to demo many computer and console games in the 90s TV show, Bad Influence.

You can see it in dozens of episodes, but never clearly enough to fathom out what the badge on the right says. They tended to use a lot of Philips technology so that would be my best guess.

My initial reaction seeing the pic, was it used in a demo set-up in shops? Where they quite often had the console in a cabinet and controllers on flexible plastic arms.

Or it might just be my old memories of watching Bad Influence!

I'm not entirely sure, although it would have been quite a crowd-puller in Comet or Rumbelows for its space-age looks alone.

I seem to remember it being available to consumers, but can't find it in the Argos catalogues from 91 - 95.

Google 'Philips Discoverer Helmet' for another wacky design from the decade before. Whatever happened to quirky TV sets?

Well I have looked through loads of youtube videos and got a screenshot of a logo from fairly close. I still can't make out the brand though unless someone else can. I know its not a Phillips or Sony, Panasonic logo.

It is similar to a Pace logo but a google search found nothing in relation to CRT tv's

That's a really good, head-on close-up, thanks... and yet we still can't read what it says. Don't you just love VHS? I've got no idea what it might be. It could even turn out to be a model name or feature brag e.g. dolby. We really would be barking up the wrong tree then.

Edit: Still no luck, but I came across this other interesting model. No idea what this one is either as the site I found it on doesn't say.

All I can say is that looks like the second letter would be D, supposing of course that the first thing is actually a letter.

My best guess for the whole name would be "edeg" or "edec", no idea if such thing exists.

I definitely remember the TV being available in shops in the UK, and it was specifically marketed towards gamers. I don't know if it had any gaming-specific features, or if it was just the space-age look that was supposed to appeal to us. You would commonly see it in stores hooked up to a Megadrive or SNES as their display model. I am fairly sure it was made by a big manufacturer, perhaps Philips.

Some of the mags did news pieces on it when it came out, too - Zero, Ace and Amiga Format would be the ones to check, I think, as they were the ones i mainly read at the time. They helped to promote it as a TV which was designed to go in bedrooms and be connected to a console, which is probably how Philips (or whoever's) marketing dept. sold it to them.

Reminds me of the Philips Discoverer (another cool looking CRT).

I've spotted another still of this particular monitor - can't make it out though Pretty sure it appeared in an Amiga magazine as someone mentioned previously.

Ah yes, looks like it's a 70s 'Keracolor' model. Nice detective work.

I Googled it and found out you can buy newly manufactured reproductions of this design as a surround for modern TVs.

That rings true with me too, Jamie. I've got plenty of scanned Amiga mags so I'll start digging. Don't be surprised if I resurrect this thread in 10 years time to share the answer!

Yep, it does look a lot like the Discoverer, Paul, except that was definitely based around an astronaut's helmet whereas the designer of the Keracolor model insists his wasn't:-

"It is sometimes misreported that the Keracolor designs were inspired by an astronaut’s helmet “after watching the first moon landing” and similarly - that they were designed to resemble the spherical Sputnik satellite launched in 1957. Both theories have been vehemently denied by Arthur Bracegirdle himself."

Don't know why he'd be getting his knickers in a knot over it. Fairly reasonable assumption to make I thought. No-one accused him of drowning kittens!

The Seiki Digital SE22FR01 is another wacky design while we're on a roll.

Interesting. All the letters are in the wrong order as though it's written in some crazy foreign language, but I get the gist. Only 22 euros, what a steal! It still looks as modern now as any of today's LCD TVs.
