Big grin "Anyone who has just purchased a convential P.C Has my sympathy"

I pulled this Amiga 500/2000 Ad from Australian Commodore Review, October issue 1987.
Gotta love that confidence.

"So why invest money in the technology of the past, when the technology of the future is available today.
From Commodore, naturally."

I realised while re-reading the topic that perhaps it came across that I found it funny and fitting that Commodore went bankrupt or something along those lines.

That was not my intention. I sincerely liked the "in your face" attitude of this ad.

Good one,
I had forgotten that the A1000 and A2000 were on sale simultaneously...

A500 for $999
A1000 for $2495

I don't see $1500 difference between those 2 Amigas.

Yeah those prices are seriously messed up. It's almost like they were thinking they couldn't make the "proper" big-box Amigas *too* cheap :/

Why even sell the 1000 at that stage?

Perhaps it's because they had judicial problem with atari and at beginning they could just sold a high end amiga, perhaps it was just a high price... I mean a higher range than the atari st... Perhaps ??

Also, the Ad looks Australian. I checked the average exchange rate in 1987 and it was 0.67 so AUD$1000 =~ USD$670 'back in the day.

Can't remember that Amiga / Atari had any legal issues over here.

It seems to me the major justifcation for the price difference is that you get the *option* of adding PC compatibility. Why even mention that if you've just told people they are idiots for buying a PC?

In one of the Jay Miner videos he said he wished there was a marketing campaign directly comparing the features of the Amiga to the PC. This seems like the exaxt opposite of such a campain :'(

So they are saying you are dumb for buying a PC, but you can pay us more than twice the price to be compatible with a PC???

Yeah the ad is Australian..Like I said in the topic the ad came from the "Australian Commodore Review" magazine..

I dont understand the main difference between the 500 and 2000 prices neither though to warrant such a price increase.

Gotta love that confidence.

Definitely an AUS only Ad.

John Laws (guy in the advert) made a career out of being in-your-face controversial. Arguably Australia's most famous radio personality.

More on "Lawsey" here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Laws

Quite a coo for Commodore to snag him for their ads.

His image appeared for a time on A500 packs, and also the learning cassettes (and probably other materials).

Cheers,
Red

"Comparing Amiga with the conventional PC is like comparing the family car to a formula one racer" - shouldn't this be reversal? A typical Commodore marketing fail.

A PC in 1987 pretty much meant an Intel 286 @ 4-8 MHz (early bird 386) with CGA, EGA or Hercules (monochrome) graphics running MS-DOS, not even Windows 3.1x was out yet, so I agree with the ad.

Last edited by modrobert; 30 May 2017 at 14:21. Reason: 80386 was released by Intel, but most PC models with 386 didn't show up until 1988/89.

But you know - the order is bad. They say Amiga is a family car.

I agree - perhaps not so much, but the 1000 was way ahead in terms of build quality to the 500.

I'd love to get my hands on an early 1000 with copper traces and a full ceramic chip set (one can dream!)

Ahh from the Ad for the Amiga the A2000 comes with a monitor - that makes a little more sense.
