Burning new 3.1.4 rom

I just purchased os3. 1.4 and I want to make a room for my 500. I don't have an eprom burner. I was wondering if anyone here would be able to direct me to a cheap burner as well what eprom I need for the a500. Thanks

The chip you need is a 27c400 and a suitable programmer could be something from mcumall or perhaps some wellon programmer that supports that part.

I would suggest a TL866 programmer - you can find them on ebay.
Then you need an adapter like this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292737973186

I got my setup for less than £60 all in.

Thanks for the response. I am seeing tk866ii and tl866cs burner does it matter or does it have to be a tl866? Thanks

As long as it's a TL866 you should be fine, the letters after relate to features not needed for burning 27c400 EPROMS. Mine is the most basic variant, TL866CS.

I believe that if you use any of the TL866 models, that you will also need an adapter. The TL866 doesn't support the 27c400. I have an adapter that makes the 27c400 look like a 27c4096, which is supported.

I use a GQ-4X which I really like.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/PRG-112-uni.../dp/B01212KD74

£89 (about $120) including 27c400 adapter. Not cheap but maybe it gives you an idea.
(Doesn't support GALs which is a bit annoying).

GALs are logic devices that can have their function erased and reprogrammed, and are sometimes used for things like address decoding and other similar functions. An EPROM is a ROM (as in, Read-Only Memory) that can be erased and reprogrammed. It generally won't do any logic stuff itself, instead being used for storing information (semi-)permanently.

I buyed too the Kickstart 3.1.4 in binary form. Can i use the newer TL866II version programmer to burn the EPROM ? http://www.autoelectric.cn/en/tl866_main.html
I will obtain the adapter for the 27c400.

I think that should work. 27c400 EPROMs are very common.

TL866CS / TL866A support VPP Max.Voltage 21V
while TL866II supports 18V

Datasheets say eproms for Amiga and C64 need around VPP 12.5V, so that should be ok.

Don’t forget you need to erase 27c400 as well. They are erased with UV by exposing the window and applying intense UV light for 6o minutes or so. If you only want to burn one ROM once and you get a blank ROM that’s fine but if you get it wrong then you have to erase it...

A good alternative is from gglabs where a flash (electrically erasable ROM) is used. It plugs in the same as a 27c400 would. Downside is you can use them with a TL866 but you need an adapter. Upside is you can reuse them without UV erase cycles (erase command in programmer software). So you can get it wrong and retry again right away, not wait for the erase time (assuming you have bought a reasonable UV erase unit). Worth considering if you thing you might want to try diagrom or some other rom version in future.

Too long exposure for UV may kill EPROM permanently. I assume every software is able to verify if EPROM is clean/erased - if not then read EPROM and check for content - it should have all data bits equal to 1 (so 8 bit will be $FF and 16 bit $FFFF).
It is recommended during erasing process (UV exposure) to short all pins in EPROM with conductive foam/aluminum foil to prevent EPROM damage (also grounding is recommended) - commonly professional erasers providing such grounding by special design.
