My A500 can't read Shadow of the Beast II

Hi all,

I've been looking for the PAL long boxed version of SotB2 for awhile now, and recently purchased it via ebay.

Unfortunately, when I insert disk one into my Amiga 500, I hear lots of spinning/whirring noises as the computer tries to read the disk. The cyclical noises subside alittle, but by that time all loading activity has ceased, and sometimes I get a Guru Meditation.

The seller has stated that he tested it on his system and it worked fine, and yet has also been nice enough to offer an exchange. Is there anything I can try before I pursue this course of action? Some sort of disk cleaner perhaps?

I've tried other disks, and they work fine.

Thanks in advance.

It's not an a500 + that you have by any chance? There is known compatability issues with some games on this machine.
There are disk cleaners available on e-bay, might be worth a try.
There is something called a kroflux and a supercard pro pcb.

Someone with one of these could make a straight copy of beast 2 for you but I guess the printed font would be missing from the disks.

Thanks for that. However it's definitely not an A500 +.

surely disk 1 is damaged or lined or corrupted by fungus, very common in old floppy disks
clean the entire surface of the disk using alcohol and a cotton swab, of course let dry
work in most cases if you do it well

here is an example on how do it in a 5.25 disk but apply to amiga disks as well

You need to open completely each disks, and use coton eye cleaners with alcohol on the disk surface in order to remove for sure all the mould present on it.

clean your drive head (if it's dirty from reading the dirty disks), and then try to load the disk

Some Disk's wont read on some drives due to head alignment. Get yourself a Gotek drive and keep your original Disks for collectors purposes, they surely wont last much longer if you keep using them, that's if they're not erroneous already.

Thank you everyone.

After some painstaking work cleaning each disk surface with cotton eye cleaners and methylated spirits, I managed to resurrect the first disk. I nearly revived the second, but it had a large blemish that could not be removed. The vendor has kindly supplied a replacement.

Remarkable stuff nonetheless, considering both disks were entirely gummed over with mold, and yet I nearly got the game working.

You guys rock
