CARE Request: Fly Harder CD32 GOLD

Hi there CARE team

The CD32 version of this great Thrust clone is flawed by a single oversight... In game you have to push up for thrust!

The red button is mapped to fire, and left and right rotate your ship, but this game would actually become playable on the console if thrust was instead mapped to another button.

In fact, IMO, the game would work best if thrust was mapped to the red button and fire was green or blue - that way you could rest the base of your thumb on the thrust button and tap fire with the tip of your thumb. However, red for fire and second button (blue) for thrust would still be workable (and lets be honest - anything beats 'up' on the joypad for tricky manouvering).

If someone could take a look at the executable on the ISO (I can provide the CD image later) and ammend it, I'd be happy to re-create the CD32 CD on your behalf and test it thoroughly. If a donation is required towards the project then I'll be happy to send a few ££s your way

In my opinion this workaround would be favourable over a WHDLoad fix, as the target device is a CD32 - the Amiga version is playable via keyboard anyway.

Thanks!

J

A fixed version is in the zone with red button for thrust and green one as fire button. (It should also work without a boot disk if necessary). I don't know if it works 100%.

PERFECT! (Apart from the broken intro sequence which was missing some of the images - fixed it via a hex editor.)

hitchhikr - I'll ensure you are properly credited for your work with this one. Thanks so much!

I'll do the artwork this evening for the new jewel case, etc. and upload the CD ISO.

(All done here, just got to update the website)

This is pretty neat I must say! It would also please Stuart Campbell, no doubt. (Doubt if he still has a CD³² these days though.)

Looks like there's 2 bugs in the original game: they're using a standard protracker replay routine with processor waits calibrated for 68000 so the 68020 is too fast and some notes are skipped and apparently they shutdown the dma channels or interruptions (dunno) when they're loading or displaying a new picture.

That makes sense.

Is it fixable? Or is there some way to trick the CD32 into thinking it's a 68000? A shell command util or something?

I don't know if KillAGA or JST would work, but you could give those a try.

I'll play around with JST's degrade function tomorrow and see if that works. If it doesn't then I'm not really worried - I've tested the game on real hardware and it's only a small glitch - it doesn't affect the in-game music so I'm not too concerned.

They used TFMX tunes for ingame music. I think the glitches in the title music (and possibly hiscore's) can be fixed, i'll check that tomorrow.

Just tried 'JST Execute' to downgrade the CD32, and it doesn't make any difference. I think the best option would be to try and fix the game if possible...

It definitely seems better on real HW than in winuae, btw.

KillAGA as a last resort perhaps?

I'll try that tonight, but as hitchhikr has pointed out the problem is caused by incompatibilities with the 68020, and not the AGA chipset (AFAIK). The best solution would be to somehow patch the module playing routine in the intro.

Fixed version uploaded into the zone (be sure to replace FlyCD32, APlayTitle & APlayHigh)

As an extra bonus i added the ability for the game to save it's hiscore table.

Wow!

Bad news is that I'll have to pixel a new intro screen now to list the new features

Thanks for this Hitchhikr - I'll have the final build ready for tomorrow
