3,5" HD in A 1200
I was searching for a description with pics of How to build in a 3,5"HD in an A1200. Especially how to make the adapter cable interests me.
I know you can buy this cable , but I prefer to build it myself. I found this site, but I believe it is in Spanish: http://www.avalonsoftware.org/encant...dd35a1200.html Does anyone knows a similar tutorial site with pics in English, Dutch or German on how to make this cable ??? I know there are files about this on aminet. But I would like to see it on pics.... And what is the maximum hd capacity with OS 3.1- 3.5 - or 3.9 ?? |

it is quite simple to make the IDE cable you need, but it is very tricky to do and takes a long time
get a standard 2.5" harddrive cable and cut off one end then spilt the ribbon cable into it's separate strands (about 15-20mm) then carefully clamp them into a standard 3.5" 40 way ide (IDC type) connector starting at pin 1. (I put the idc connector in a vice and push each wire into the connector with a very small flat head screwdriver) there should be 4 wires left over, these are for power but don't use them or you will/might burn tracks on your mobo, better to splice into the floppy power cable... as for HD sizes, using FFS, 4Gb drives with maximum 2Gb partitions using <OS3.9 OS3.9 you can use any size harddrive, not sure about max partition size though as I use SFS that has no limits (well iirc a single file must be under 2Gb)... If you want to stick the 3.5 incher inside the A1200, you better start looking for one of those Seagate ultraslim 3.5" drives, other drives won't fit (unless you bruteforce them)
In any case, I'd recommend fitting it outside the A1200 box. I have one of these ultraslims inside my A1200 (no cable adapter built, I got one of those adapters to connect 2.5" HDs on a normal 3.5" cable, it's a little PCB), and I would rather have something secured into a craddle than having it the way I do. I fear for it to move and fry my board any minute! I secured it well and aisled it properly, but nevertheless, I still would preffer to take it outside. |

I bit the bullet and went out and brought a 2.5-3.5 HD converter cable got it froma computer market for 20p! so if your in the uk it may not be woth wasting your time constructing one, defornately agree with mounting HD outside ya miggy, at one stage I had a nice slim Maxtor 3.5 HD squished into my miggy 1200 and used to get very worried about the massive amount of heat that built up inside as a result! :hoo

...i use a seagate 3.5" drive, just trough it in an antistat bag and removed the shielding inside my 1200 and if fits without problems. Had it outside of my 1200 for a year or so and then got tiered of having a bunch of cables and stuff around it... runs like a dream, never got a problem with it and ive used this setup for like 3 years or something and the miggy has been turned on for hours. And cus of the small size the amiga top sqeezes it tight.. no moving around inside of there...
