Ah, well all Amiga models are the same, in that sense... there's just some variance in the peripherals (some have built in SCSI/IDE/PCMCIA etc.) but the main architecture is identical. There is very little difference between the A1000/A500/A2000/A600. The 32 bit models do have the Kickstart divided on two separate chips though.

Then I may give it a try, if I can find one. In the mean time my replacement kickstarts should be in by the end of the week. If that does not solve it, recapping will commence.

Solved! Tried new kickstarts - still messed up. For some reason, I decided to think about the difference between workbench and the other stuff. It occured to me it was happening when the disk should be moving, and it was not. System test and Analyzer both tested the disk as OK so I did not think about that earlier. I knew I had already replaced both CIAs but something did not sit right. As someone here suggested, I swapped the CIAs instead of replacing them with supposed good. Problem went away. The issue was the EVEN CIA. Turns out one of my spare CIAs was bad. The A500 Workbench now works. Thanks so much to all who have assisted here!

Now to complete the restore...

Excellent! It can certainly be a pain to diagnose these things if even the spare parts are an unknown quantity.

I feel your pain, my problem was worse recently. As it was an A1200. Faulty ram, swapped out with what should have been working ram. Spent all day replacing chipset only to be left with conclusion, ram was faulty, even though I replaced it. Fun times.
