Screen resolution options with Scanplus ECS
Hi, so I have a ScanPlus ECS in my Amiga 2000, and it does a great job of letting me use a VGA monitor as the primary display. But I wonder if I'm getting the most out of it. The only tolerable screen mode is NTSC_High Res, which isn't exactly very high in resolution. If I change to NTSC: High Res Laced it becomes a nauseating flickerfest with my HP CRT monitor. Am I limited to this, being that I have a 8362 Denise in an A2000? If I obtained a 8373 Super Denise, would I have better options?

If you get an ECS denise you can do Euro36-type modes, which is more tolerable for interlace, or noninterlaced modes in 640x480 but they will be 4 colors.
Simple scandoublers don't give good results on CRTs for interlaced content. The effect is even worse in this case as the monitors are not designed for 15Khz interlace, so they flicker even more thanks to low-persistence phosphors. A simple scandoubler is usually only good for progressive content. Last edited by AmigaHope; 28 July 2020 at 06:31. |
