Question Tape Drive in Winuae

Hi there,

I wonder if it is possible to use an emulated Tape drive (Like IOmega for example) inside winuae.
I would like to use it for backup purposes and so on...

If not, does anybody know if it will be implemented ??

WINUAE IS THE BEST !!...

You can backup WinUAE hard drives easily.

Either use an archive program from within winuae and zip the hard drive contents to a PC directory OR

Download the program "Reorg" from aminet, install it on your WinUAE Workbench setup and defrag the WinUAE hard drive making sure you select the option "clear unused blocks". What you'll find is the HDF file can now be compressed to a very small size in windows, ready to burn onto a CD for backup.

Hi there,

Thanks for this really helpfull information, this one works fine !!!

I would still like to use a Tape drive ( emulated ), because i have a configuration, wich uses a real amiga harddisk ( RDB Formatted ).

Or do you know another way for this one too ??

I've never used a real Amiga HD connected to WinUAE, but I'd imagine you can still zip the contents to a PC directory that has been added in the hard drive tab.

Or copy the contects of the real hard drive to a HDF, then use option 2.

The zip option seems the easiest option to me.

The Reorg solution still works, if you use FastFileSystem and reorg every partition.

If you don't reorg, the archive becomes slightly bigger, still no problem.

But why not use LhA or Zip on AmigaOS to create a backup.

Or just burn the whole HDF on CD, uncompressed.

Or use Windows utilities to backup the HDF on tape.

Reorg is a must because if you don't "clear unused blocks" the compressed HDF will end up many times larger if data has been shifted around on it.

I doubt it. If the HDF is empty, you don't need a backup and if it is full, there is not much room to shift data around.

I also would like to use a tape backup in WinUAE. At present, I have gigs of data to dump from tape and I will have to do so on the Amiga, then transfer all of that over to the PC, whereas it would make more sense to just restore it all to the PC/WinUAE and save myself a lot of manhours. So I need to restore, rather than backup.
