Two button joystick

If I get a joystick that supports two buttons but the game supports one button, what happens to second button? Unused? Or two both buttons act the same?

It would be a simple mod to add a switch that switches between one- and two-button mode, where in one-button mode both buttons do the same thing.

I find a button that makes the second button do the same as up (i.e Jump or acclerate) more useful.
