Compact flash drive Vs. 2,5" hard disk drive

It's time to upgrade my 1,3GB 2,5" Hard Drive on my accelerated A1200.

I'm not able to choose to mount a real 2,5" (4200 rpm) Vs. a Compact Flash drive.
I don't want exceed the limit of 4 gb for each and price MUST NOT be considered.

I would like to know any opinion/experience, but if you could answer these questions it would be much appreciated:

1. Does real hard disk have more lastability/reliability vs. CF?
2. About speed, does compact flash is always faster (reading/writing and access time)?
3. Which has the best performance by accelerated Amiga?
4. Does Ultra II CF are faster than standard CF on Amiga?

1. same difference
2. both max out the IDE channel, but CF has "zero" seek time.
3. probably CF
4. I'd say they will be faster, but even an old 8MB card I found gathering dust on my shelf was plenty fast. I guess I ought to try sysinfo's diskspeed on it. :-)

Just curious, can you use a CF drive in a PC as a HD?

yes you, i have a linux box running from a 2GB cf card

The problem is that both the 2.5" hard disk AND the CF can outperform in speed the basic IDE port on the Amiga, even with an 060 you would be lucky to see any more than a couple of megabytes a sec.

However saying this if any performace could be measured I would suggest it would be the fact that there is virtually no seek time with CF cards compared to about 9ms or greater with a regular hdd.

you could also argue that CF cards dont require the same draw on power, dont produce heat anywhere near the amount of heat a hdd would and dont make any noise at all either.

It's the same thing as with an Amiga (Amiga's IDE is not that special after all). Just get an IDE to CF adapter (search eBay for 100000 hits on the subject) and plug that in.

There are many kinds, some plug into a 44pin laptop style IDE cable, some plug directly into a 40pin motherboard IDE port and some can plug into a 40pin IDE cable.

Just connect the CF card + data cable (+ power if the adapter is 40pin) and start installing your OS.

When you connect a CF card to IDE, it is NOT hot-swappable. Do not remove the card while the computer is running, you will end up with filesystem corruption.
