Eek Raspberry Pi Zero: USD 5 computer!

Apologies if this has been posted, I really couldn't find it.

A new Raspberry Pi model has been released and not only it is smal las hell, its also super cheap!!! 5 dollars gets you a unit, which is ridiculous.

Power-wise they claim it performs better than a Raspberry Pi 1, and that's amazing. I know a Raspberry Pi 1 isn't great for emulation, but I use one as my media server with Kodi and it works really well.

Could be good for a cheap emulation project anyway! I am sure it runs well a lot of platforms.

Bonus: launch video features an Amiga 600!

I bought mine in apparently the only store in the world that still had any yesterday. Fortunately it's a stone's throw from my house in Brooklyn. But when I got mine they had like 20 left, I am sure they are all gone now.

It's a Pi clocked at 1GHz. For $5 or £4.

I'll just let that sink in a moment.

We had 7Mhz CPUs back in the day. There was no way in hell we'd ever have a board like this for a few quid - not even a 3.5MHz z80.

1GHz.

£4.

That's 1GHz + 512MB of RAM! My new A1200 was only 14MHz and had 2MB and that was £400. Its amazing how far the computing world has progessed.

And it could be very well suited to build a convertor for usb mice and gamepads and still be cheaper than any of the custom adapters. Though some might consider an adapter running at 100 times the speed of the host system some kind of...exorbitance

Here's a video where they build it into a CRT TV, and put RetroPi on it (with emulator for NES, SNES, Sega, Amiga and more)

Given that it's about as powerful as the original CC OpenPandora, it should be pretty bloody sweet

I didn't try it yet but I can test it soon, I just need to sort out a proper test image to work with. What game would be a good benchmark?

N64 runs like arse, so that's out of the question.

Same on the latest full power Pi, thus me asking about PS1 for the Zero.

That's pretty good. If you could do a similar thing with one of these, then you'd have total retro portable gaming heaven

You could probably even drive the Pi Zero from the TV's battery pack!

I always found that RType Delta was a good one - it used to slow down summats rotten on the Pandora until the emulator was properly optimised.

N64 runs like arse on the Pandora too. It's weird - there's so many folks on the Pandora forums that swear that performance of the new Mupen64 V2 is spot on (even on the CC pandora) but it's really not, and the emulator is chock full of graphical glitches.

Rather than building it into a TV, why not the controller itself?

Good thing I didn't believe a single word the fanbois posted online back then - otherwise I might've ended up buying one It just didn't make sense to me that the N64 could be emulated perfectly on a Pandora. It's an immensely complicated architecture and PC emulators still stuggle when it is accurately emulated.

I suppose they must be repeating that to convince themselves that dishing out that much money on a Pandora was worth it

That's a great game!

If your devices can run PS1 emulation at a decent speed then another shmup to try is ‘X2: No Relief’.

It’s not the best shooter on the PS1 (there are many good ones to choose from) but it’s a well-made direct sequel to the Amiga shooter ‘Project X’ from Team 17 (and published by Capcom).

I am following it since the day it was released, and all units they made were sold withing few hours. Actully, iirc about 10K were attached to ThePiMag, so if you can find latest issue, it has RPi0 attached on cover.

Who would guess there would be a time you get cover computer, just the same way we used to get demo/games.

From specs, it should be more close to original RPi and should emulate well 16 bit computers.

I have few microUSB - usb adapters (iir few bucks @ amazon) - and those you would need to get your usb controller/keyboard/mouse working. If you get Logitech combo - even better, you can have both on single port. Second port is for power.

I wonder if powered USB hub can provide enough power to run RPi0 and host few other USB devices. (Akira, do you have any? )
