CRT is King!

I've just swapped over my little 14" Sony Trinitron CRT TV for a LIFETEC (German brand?) 55cm CRT TV...... and WOW!!! .....my A1200 has never looked so good on a TV before



The 'ol SCART connection certainly helps. The colours are vibrant and the pixels.... as sharp as they need to be. It's got pretty 'punchy' stereo speakers (for an old TV from the the 1990's) as well.


CRT for native resolutions on old machines is such a satisfying experience..... new is not ALWAYS better


The photos don't do it justice (any 'weird' effect is from my phone camera not the TV). My advice..... if you can get an old SCART CRT TV then grab while you can..... before they ALL end up down the tip!

4 of my 5 Amigas are connected to CRTs (either monitors or 4:3 CRT TVs). There's no substitute.

Every time I connect one of my retro machines to a CRT I think "How could we look at this flickering crap" and move to a LCD instead =)

But then again, I am ultra sensitive to flickering as I have horrible migraines that gets triggered by it.

But yes, I know what you mean, it looks a lot better... Stupid brain =(

CRT really *is* king. I just received my 1085S in from Germany and man. This is how it's supposed to look.

I am curious as to why someone with 'plasma' in his nick would promote LCD tech.
There is something about the 'feel' of CRT displays which is really hard to reproduce with LCD/plasma/OLED. I think OLED has the best chance of getting there with the proper filtering (scanline emulation etc). microLED might also be a worthy contestant when it becomes available.

Frankly i don't miss the scanlines. But the natural antialiasing effect yes -- these lcd are too pixelated.

Couldn't agree more. Once-2000 EUR big CRT TVs (the kind they used to put in conference rooms at a company are super!) can sometimes be had for the asking.

I have a Tandberg made at just the right time - just before a few tried to make 16:9 CRT TVs and then LCD/Plasma took over. Mine looks brilliant

Thomson and Sony are usually also top notch

Plasma torches are my favourite method of starting a TerribleFire... which is the other nickname I’m known by.

I generally use these torches on CRTs because I hate them so much!

Can't say I miss the older eye-killer CRTs, but the newer 100 and 120 Hz CRTs seem pretty attractive for retro machines.

no they are horrible. They have digital filters that smear the picture and add latency.


personally I only play on crt. The games where made for the crt in mind.

All 100Hz CRTs i've seen were crap. The 100Hz causes some jerkiness. Always visable in the scrolling texts on news channels or i.e. football matches. Nothing beats 50/60Hz CRTs.

Actually I find it useful to have both I have an 14" phillips tv for watching demos and stuff, and 19" eizo connected up to a va2000 gfx card via dvi/hdmi (also does native modes limited to 12 bits) and also connected to vga from scanjuggler lite.... but I'm not yet fully satisfied, so I'll continue tinkering with the setup :-D

You can actually turn that off. I have a 100hz Loewe where you can turn all that crap off and the picture is ultra sharp, no smearing, no ultra smoothing and, most importantly, no 50Hz flickering. My Amiga on this TV looks great.

Again all that can be fixed with setting adjustments. I have no issues with "jerkiness" (whatever that may be) with mine. Games that scroll both horizontally and vertically are perfectly smooth.

Loewe may have fixed it later in a few models. I've seen dozens TVs back then, unbearable for scrolling games. And you will always get ghosting/blur in scrolling games since they run in 50fps. Just like with the old 100Hz CRT monitors and emulators.
