My Amiga Makeover Project

Well it looks like my Amiga is going to be out of action for a couple of months so I've decided to give it a bit of a makeover in the meantime.

The first thing I did is... umm... you are going to ask me why the hell i did this, and the honest answer is that i really have no idea.

Ok so i painted the radiation shield gold. Yes i know it doesn't really do anything and it's completely pointless and if i was normal i would have just thrown it away but i think it looks quite nice.

Planned things to do: repaint case in black and midnight blue
Remake LED board with blue and white LEDs

Nice I actually like the RF shield, I always keep it in my Amigas. It's also pretty much needed for using the HD tray (which I always use), or so I seem to remember.

The RF shield does not have to be present in order to fit a HDD tray, but it does provide a mounting surface for a hard drive if you have no tray, but then you will need some double-sided sticky pads or somesuch.

I hate the upper shield (mine always gets chucked) but I guess if you are going to keep it you might as well make it look pretty

Radio Frequency radiation though, right?

Not Radio Frequency odours, or Radio Frequency fog.

I systematically remove RF shields from every device I own, as well as their RF modulators (unless that creates problems, like on the C64).

It's a bit unoriginal, sorry. I do have black keys though. Well mostly black keys, they came from a random (non-Amiga) Mitsumi keyboard i bought at a flea market for £1 that happened to have the same key fitting, but it didn't have a numeric keypad and the special keys didn't fit so I've still got a white space bar and beige function keys &c.

I bought a Cherry G80 with the specific intention of pulling it to bits and remaking an Amiga layout keyboard out of it, may still do that one day.

Ahh the age old question of:

"To shield or not to shield?"

I would make a point of sacking the top shield on any amiga that came near me years ago! The only point of keeping one would be to hold a 3.5" hard drive in place along with some method of insulating it.

Now I will leave well alone if it does not need to be touched! The only other reason I would remove one is if it is all manky and rusted.

Just recently turned my attentions onto my first A1200 bought back in 1994. The bottom shield had suffered a bit, so armed with some P80 wet-n-dry I managed to clean it up like new. Only did the back part where the ports are. I am quite chuffed how it came out! Will attempt to do the top and see if it will be ok, tbh I see no point but this old machine deserves a bit of love

Stage 2 complete:

the black is a bit thin on the very front and back edges but i'm not sure how much i care about that and i'm almost out of black paint.

So yeah i painted the inside too, well it looks nice with the gold. Also i wanted to see what the finish was like before i took a risk with the outside.

Now need to buy some new black rubber feet.

yeah it was a bit rusty, it's Hammerite Direct to Rust gold paint

i just went over the back and front edges again with black, it's more propellant than paint coming out now though, also i realise i forgot the little removable panel from the back but i'll worry about that later.

It's not a perfect finish, ah the perils of spray painting when you don't have a garage and you have to do it out in the open, #&*%ing dandelion seeds.

Also pictured is my new SDHC card reader.
