Hey guys (and gurls),

I thought it'd be nice to introduce myself briefly

So, i live in Belgium and i'm in the 30s (i stopped counting). I owned a c64 more than 20 years ago, which i sold to buy an Amiga 500, which i sold to buy an Amiga 1200... I owned a damn huge collection of floppies and now i would cry to have it back.

I live with my wife in an appartment and don't have enough space, so i don't own Amigas anymore but i use Winuae to relive the magic... I also use PSPuae and i'm generally interested in: video games (mainly rpgs), fantasy literature, sci-fi, astronomy, emulation and i recently started to learn Java...

By historical fantasy, I mean tales of adventure set in medieval and earlier times with a fantasy element introduced by exploiting the fact that these people were superstitious and could only explain what we now accept as natural phenomena by the existence of spirits, elves, hobgoblins, wood nymphs, magic, witchcraft and (to a lesser extent) sorcery.

Authors of such tales I enjoy reading are Sylvian Hamilton, Pip Vaughan-Hughes, Marion Zimmer Bradley, C.C. Humpreys, Karen Maitland, Wilbur Smith (his Egyptian novels) and David Gemmel (his Drenai novels).

David Gemmel's Drenai novels are actually an exception, because they are not based in a documented historical setting (though some of his other novels are). In fact, I have recently discovered that these novels were actually set in the future, following some supposedly yet-to-happen nuclear cataclysm. Otherwise, they are very similar, though they owe more than a little to the tales of Conan the Barbarian set in the Hyborian world (which I also enjoy reading), but have no common central character.

I'm sorry it's taken a while to respond to your questions. I had forgotten the names of one or two of the authors and had to get the books out of storage to rediscover them.

Thanks for your answer, i've never really thought about the historical settings in the fantasy stories. Fantasy is my first source of escapism, the furthest from this world, the best. But it must be really interesting to know the facts behind those great stories.

I have read a few books of D. Gemmel (Legend and Waylander). They were great and i'm impatient to read the Drenai serie but i still have a huge pile of books before i get there...
At the moment, i'm reading a trilogy of Dragonlance (dragons of a winter night,...), then i'll probably read some RA Salvatore.

The only series i couldn't read until the end were George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire (way too political for me) and Robert Jordan's Wheel of time (his female characters are sooo boring that it makes the story unreadable, imo).

Sometimes, i also read/play some fighting fantasy books too, but that's another story
