low quality sound

i havent used my amiga for a while so im not 100% sure but...

playing games i used to play years ago they dont sound as brilliant as they used to. the music seems kinda scratchy and i need to turn the sound up really high to get a decent volume.

i thought it was a problem with my 1084 but it is the same through my logitech speakers. both my a2000 and a1200 are doing it. i've tried exchanging the sound cable also...

I say it's a hardware problem, so:
- check every cable
- check different outputs
- check different inputs
- call a specialist

some part of the hardware is more than likely stuffed yes thats been established.

suggestions on what part is what im after, which chip controls the sound?

It would be the cruelest twist as if you have a sound gremlin deliberatley destroying your audio out put

You say you have already changed the stereo audio cable , but it is a while since you booted eiether machine ..

So just a couple of questions

Have you checked the socket you are using from the mains has a properly wired and tightly screwed up fused plug in it ? [ Any loose mains conections will mess with the transformers out puts hence distortions and even some on screen problems]

Besides the joystick you are using to play the game have you any other gizmo's attached to the machines ports ? [ If you have a faulty/poorly conected printer lead or dodgey external floopy drive etc that be at fault]

The advice is allways remove all non essential external bits and try the basics just running a tracker from your mouse command if both your machines are still doing the same poor performance ....

Then you have been cursed by a fault which sadly may require your Paula chip to be replaced , but it is likely to have been caused through a faulty peripheral rather than an act of mystery .

If anyone else has hopefully a more detailed solution for you , then I wish you good luck . cos I,m not infalliable eiether

It could be the audio ports, or some capacitor that is fucking up. As woody says it's damn strange that BOTH machines do the same, you sure its not your cables or your speaker system???

If both the A1200 and the A2000 are suddenly having the same problem, then it seems unlikely that the cause of the problem lies in either machine. I'd definitely double check anything that was used in both setups to see if it might not be part of the problem. And you might want to make sure that the speakers, etc. aren't located too close to anything else that could be causing interference. Try shutting off any nearby lamps, etc. to see if that has any effect ... and turn off the giant electromagnet sitting under the desk while you're at it.

the 2000 is unusable at the moment but i THINK it turned out just to be the 1084 but i never tried it with external speakers.

i say both machines are doing it because the 1200 sounded the same as the 2000 through the 1084 but also the same through external speakers. once i repair the 2000 mobo ill get to the bottom of that one.

for now though the immediate issue is with the 1200.
i only recently got it and it came with a hacked power supply. i dont have another psu to check it with but perhaps the wiring could be an issue? it does look like it was done a bit dodgy.

It could be your PSU - check the 5V line. I had this problem with my 1200 after an external IDE drive blew it up. Fortunately the warranty was still valid at the time (so you can guess how long ago that was).

i have now another 1200 which has similar crappy sound. not AS crappy but VERY low i need to turn the volume up to the maximum to get a decent level.

im going to have to get another psu to test it with...

another thing i forgot to mention is that both my 1200s give audio feedback when loading floppys. the sound the disk makes loading is all coming out of the speakers!
