It's the interface itself that is slow

The GVP one has been selling for under £40 on ebay recently.

There is no need for a separate PSU if you have an iron core A500 PSU (rather than the very light one). A small mod can be made to take the power from the A500.

The A590 can be made to go at approximately the same rate as the GVP with a few mods and tweaks. They are both limited to well below 3Mbyte/sec

That's wrong. The controller itself is pretty good and fast but the original HD used is totally slow.

Ok, it may be DIP RAM, but it is 2Mbyte max, unlike the GVP which is 8.

So will there be any problem connecting one of these up to an Amiga 500+? as they were designed for the A500?

Also what hard drives do they take standard scuzzi drives or something weird? think 20mb wont take long to fill

It depends on which ROM version they have inside. Early ROMs dont work well with KS2.04 I think but I wouldnt swear on that.

Obviously a 1.3 hard drive wont boot with KS2.04 either.

Depending on what ROM version you have you may be limited to hard drives smaller than 512Mbytes.

It will work just fine, although the 1.3 colour scheme doesn't look nice with the 2.04 3d look.

Cool thought i was going to have another compatibility problem

..Wonder when all this amiga crap i bought online is going to arrive waiting on 6 different things and a pile of misc hardware and games

So what kind of hard drive do i need to upgrade the thing? or is it worth waiting for it to arrive before i buy a bigger disk?

Cheers

Mike

**Edit just got an email from the seller saying its been lost ..Ah great ill have to track down another one.

Kickstart 1.3 will boot 2.04 harddisk, so long as it's not using an unsupported ffs option. If you use a newer ffs to format a disk, you will get some extra icons on 1.3 wb. My a500 boots from the hd from 1.3/2.04/3.1.

When it boots from 1.3, the startup sequence resets the palette to 1.3, and reassigns everything to sys:1.3/ and boots up a 1.3 workbench. Just for fun ;-)
