50hz Vsync causing audio problems

I've been using a release from a year ago quite happily but I updated to 1.6.1 after I read about the auto screen resizing (which works really well), I am having two issues though.

I use a 50hz refresh rate for nice smooth PAL scrolling and until the latest update I wasn't having any issues with it, however now when I use Vsync at 50hz I'm getting slight audio pitch wobbles every couple of seconds.

If I set Vsync at 60hz or disable it the audio sounds fine, I've tweaked every other audio option and nothing solves it.

My other problem is I used to use the HQ2x option for crisp, un-blurred pixels but in the updated UAE this mode appears to cause a huge drain on the system, is there something I'm missing?

Thanks for sticking with me, anyone know whats going on?

I should add my specs, Q6600 @3.5ghz, 4GB of RAM and a GTX280 GPU, running on XP.

Try latest 2.0 beta first, it has some vsync updates.

hq2x has always been slow, you can try D3D HQ2X filter instead (if you have fast enough display card)

I've tried a couple of the betas but I'm still getting the audio wobble, also the Direct3D mode appears to have a bit of lag on my pc.

I didn't like the scaling method used in the D3D mode either, if there was an option to keep the pixel aspect ratio I'd be happier as I can see all the pixels changing size as the screen scrolls, I've seen this in other emulators using D3D modes so maybe it's not an option?

I had perfect PAL scrolling but with a 'sound wobble' problem on two PCs in the past. On one of them I upgraded the video card (not due to this problem) and reinstalled DirectX then the problem went away. I would suggest reinstalling DirectX and/or your video card drivers just to see if there is any improvement.

I noticed a huge CPU usage increase when using the same filter option on different PCs but I just changed the filter method as I only use simple screen stretching anyway.

I've already tried reinstalling my drivers but I shall try DirectX as well, I don't think it will help though as v1.4.4.0 runs beautifully, albeit without the fantastic auto resize.

http://www.winuae.net/files/b/winuae.zip has some vsync adjustments, any better?

D3D filter is always 1:1 unless scaling is used (remember to use point filtering if you don't want any blurriness)

I also tried updating DirectX 9, it didn't help either.

Hmm.. Use beta winuae.zip link posted above, enable onscreen leds (misc panel) and keep your eyes on SND% value. Try to explain how it changes (does it stay fully stable, jump between two values or do something weird)

Do the same in 60Hz, any obvious differences?

Same SND% behavior when in KS 1.3 WB hand screen? (compared to some game)

Disable all filters when testing (can use D3D but also test with and without D3D), use A500 quickstart.

and finally attach both winuaebootlog.txt and winuaelog.txt.

I can't see labels on the LED's but I assume I'm looking at the first three.

In 50hz only the first LED on the left is changing significantly, it flickers between -05 and -07, every time the audio wobbles it jumps to between -20 and -39, this behaviour doesn't change on the kickstart screen.

In 60hz there is more activity on all three, the first LED is constantly cycling between +70 to +99, the next LED reads between 13 and 22, the next reads 50 to 53, this also doesn't change on the kickstart screen.

Hmm, I think I'm getting somewhere, I just realised that I always lower the audio buffer to 2 as I can sense the delay when it is at 4.

If I leave the buffer at 4 the first LED is more calm, it doesn't read above -15 most of the time and audio is stable if a little bit lagged.

I just had a good play of Turrican 2 with the sound buffer at 4, there is still a small wobble happening, it's not as regular or severe but its definitely there

I had audio problems and I went into Pri. & extentions in winUAE and changed the option where it says 'when active run priority at' to 'Above Normal' this fixed it for me

Yeah, that's why I too pushed Toni to include this option many moons ago Before that, I had just raised priority level by hand via Task Manager. At any rate: with a couple of programs running at the same time, this is the ONLY way for slower PCs to get smooth audio as I've found.

You could try using portaudio with ASIO4ALL drivers to see how that works. AFAIK Portaudio sound will never give wobble, but could potentially give crackle or other sound distortion in WinUAE (if buffer size too small or other problem with sound hardware).

You can download the ASIO4ALL installer here: http://www.asio4all.com/ . It does NOT modify or mess with any of your windows sound drivers.
The portaudio.dll is on winuae.net AFAIK.

I have to admit, I had some sound distortion (muffled, low-fi, distorted sound) using ASIO4ALL in 1.6.1.

But since the 2.0 betas, it has been fine. I haven't done much testing and plan to do more. But my initial checks gave no distortion or crackling for me even at buffer size 1. One check was playing "just falled in love.mod" on eagleplayer in workbench. With 1.6.1 I have to say it was very strange: Some mods I played were distorted, some were perfectly fine.
