Yes, I would like to know too, since I am having problems with my drive using CacheCDFS (or maybe it is just the hardware).

I know of the following:
- AllegroCDFS (supposedly the fastest, $ or with some elbox products)
- CacheCDFS (OS3.9)
- ASIMCDFS

There may be more.

CacheCDFS is my personal choice. its fast, reads anything including standard data dvd.

AllegroCDFS being the worst as its highly unstable and tends to hang the miggy just by pressing the eject button :/

There´s also CacheCDFS that came with IdeFix. Can't say what's the difference, at least the version number is totally different from 3.9's and they don't mix favourably.

Thanks. I will install it tomorrow as i'm far away from home now. The installation should be done from the os 3.9 cd?

Anyone knows how to uninstall AsimCDFS?

Best Regards

Rod

Removal depends slightly on the version but this should work:
  • Remove the mount commands referring to the CD drive and the assigns referring to AsimCDFS: and AsimCDFS_Buffer: from s:user-startup and then delete the directories that these two assigns were referring to.
  • Remove the CD0/PD0 mount entries from DEVS:Mountlist and/or DEVS:DOSDrivers and/or SYS:Storage/DOSDrivers, the correct entries to remove are any that use the AsimCDFS handler.
  • Delete the following:
    SYS:DEVS/asimcdfs.device
    SYS:DEVS/asim_atapi.device
    SYS:DEVS/bookmark.device
    SYS:DEVS/cardmark.device
    SYS:DEVS/cd.device
    SYS:DEVS/cdtv.device
    SYS:L/AsimCDFS
    ENVARC:AsimCDFS [dir]
    SYS:FONTS/AsimTunes2 [dir]
    SYS:FONTS/AsimTunes2.font
    SYS:LIBS/playerprefs.library
Fingers crossed that I haven't missed anything major.

Thanks OddBot. AsimCDFS has been uninstalled without problems.

I will try to install the other CacheFS now.

Edit:
Now my A3000 and A4000 have CacheCDFS installed. THANKS everyone.

Best Regards

Rod

Does it mean that purchasing IDE-fix or IDE-max can handle DVDs players too ?
Just asking because their website doesn't tell..

@Capitaine

The CacheCDFS that comes with IDE-Fix / IDE-Fix-Express and OS3.9 will be able to read standard a DVD file structure (as long as you have a DVD ROM/RW) I dont know about movie disc's however and as far as i know there is no software that will allow you to directly play movies from DVD and also I am unaware of any program on the amiga that will allow you to burn or write DVD's

The CacheCDFS in OS3.9 lets you read the contents of DVD Video discs, for example the .vob files. I thought there was some program that could play them. MooVid?

FryingPan can burn DVDs.

@Zetr0

Not sure. 1x DVD is about 1.3MB/s so DMA SCSI may alleviate need for high processor power. Without SCSI and slow CPU, hmmm looks risky

You should try the demo version, as I believe that is able to write to discs.

I'm not understanding why everyone is a big fan of CacheCDFS - I cannot get it to read a CD reliably, I keep getting read errors ev en after 'pratting around' with the MaxTransfer serrings. CacheCDFS is a complete load of crap. The only thing in it's favour is that it can read Joilet/Windows CD-ROMs.

AMP (Amidogs' Movie Player) can play DVD video, but it needs PPC to run and SCSI to read the data quickly enough. Umilator (Amithlon2) was going to include a DVD playback utility, but I don't know it's name or who wrote it.
