Acorn Archimedes games...
I'm going to install risc os on one of my raspberry pi's next week and have a dabble with some acorn archimedes software (basically reliving my days at school where they used to have the archimedes).
I've sourced most of the software I want (games like etype, lemmings, etc) but I'm having little joy finding the full game of zarch (virus on the amiga) and also battle chess, which I'm sure I used to play on the archimedes? Does anyone on here have an idea where I might aquire the above?... Or are these non dumped games /still copyrighted and unavailable etc? |

Well I've got most things working on my pi but I can't get Zarch to work at all and don't really know how to convert the adf provided above to something that works in riscos via Adffs Jaspp?
It looks pretty much identical to me? The music on lemmings is much better though on the archimedes! Last edited by Baboon; 27 May 2018 at 23:22. |

I got a feeling most old software from the 90's doesn't work on modern versions of RISC OS from memory

Well I know from looking at YouTube vids zarch is playable with adffs running on raspberry pi, it just looks an impossible task (at least for me) to either track down the files or make playable myself by converting adfs to a format that does work. Hey ho.

Isn't Zarch one of those titles that is actively pursued and removed by the original author? Not saying it is, but I have a vague recollection of that sounding familiar from when I had an Archimedes here and was trying to play about with it.
I'm actually vaguely interested in trying RiscOS on one of the PI's I have kicking about here now [PS] We never had Archimedes at school. We had a Research Machines 380Z. I kind of feel old now! |

The original author is David Braben, weird how he would pursue this and not Elite or any of his other games though.
But something like that must be happening as neither a demo (Lander) or Zarch exists in TOSEC. |

What format do you need to convert it to make it work? I have it in apd format, (whatever that is) if that helps.

I've found an apf and also have the adf but it needs to be in jdf format I believe so it will work natively with adffs (so not having to boot into an emu like arcem)?
I just can't get this running on my pi? I've had a go at creating the jfd based on my apf but get the error using adffs (2.64?) 'could not allocate 28mb to the current wimoslot?' when I try loading it? Last edited by Baboon; 28 May 2018 at 12:24. |

Ahh, yeah, all coming back to me now. That IS what's going on. I think Elite is only about because he was co-author with Ian Bell and it was Ian Bell's site that you could get it from? May not be accurate, but it's something like that.

The easiest way to get your Zarch adf file running on a Pi is to launch ArcEm and then run it through that. It works perfectly.
Im sure getting it running direct through jaspp is possible (I think I've done it, can't remember) but your best bet is to as Sirbod/Jon Abbott (the guy who authored jaspp) on the stardot forum or the jaspp one. http://forums.jaspp.org.uk:9000/forum/ |

You need to use A310Emu or similar to play old archie games on the RiscPC/Kinetic/RPi.
This is because RO 4 and up have some critical changes to the OS that no longer supports the old Archie hardware. |

Well I've got it running on my pi via arcem. It's running a bit fast so I'll need to check my settings but it works perfectly. Next to test is Chocks Away and e-type.
I'm loving playing about with risc os though, takes me right back to my childhood when we had these in school (and amiga when I got home from school haha). Thanks for all the help people. |

32 bit clean code for Arm3 will run on modern Arm. But if you use more modern instructions it won’t work. Basically apart from the crazy 26bit only instructions it’s possible to make compatible code. |

Anbody know a good place for adfs for acorn archimedes games? I'm particular after games released by 'fourth dimension' (the dungeon, powerband, stunt racer, plus a decent rip of Chocks Away disk 1, Provocstor, Abuse etc)?
It seems these are absolutely impossible to find anywhere. Admins: Please delete the above message if this is against the rules!! Last edited by Baboon; 01 June 2018 at 21:23. |
