Fitting Apollo 1240/1260 in standard A1200 case

Is this possible?

Just got my Apollo 1240 40MHz in the mail...
Mine won't fit, the heatsink crashes in the keyboard! The heatsink is like 0.8CM too high

Any tips or tricks..?

Do an ebay search for vga heatsinks. There should be a fair amount of choice they usually just stick on.

I have an Enzotech CNB-S1L on my 1260, it just barely fits. You could easily get away with something smaller though.

I found this and this on ebay. Not the best quality but should do the trick. The second one should cover most of the chip and just about clear the keyboard, minimal filing if any.

8Bit,

I have something that suits

ie. a 3mm high heatsink and a 7mm high 12v fan.

PM me and I'll pop them in the post FOC with some heat transfer tape also.

I had an apollo 1240.....it doesn't fit well ....
The plastic and white lid of the A1200 case can't be inserted in place if the Apollo card is connected.....because it crash with the memory simm

The apollo 1240 it's designed for tower systems otherwise it can't be inserted like any other accelerator..(unless somebody do special modifications)

even if anybody solve the tall heatsink/fan problem....I think that the original plastic lid can't be inserted in the original place ...

The trapdoor cover cannot be clipped on because the ram sticks out too much, so either cut apertures in the cover or leave it off altogether.

I wouldn't worry about lapping the heatsink as the asaka tape is fairly thick.

I will drill and fix the fan for you if I get time.

Try running the fan at 7v as this should be sufficient cooling (is on mine) and is an awful lot quieter.

I cant get the trap door on with my typhoon mk2 so I just left it off. Its not caused me any trouble and its better ventilated

That's not true. The Apollo 1240 and 1260 were designed specifically to fit inside the A1200's standard case, which is why the CPU is on the top side rather than underneath like the Blizzard equivalents. They didn't come with heatsinks, so there was no collision with the keyboard, and it fitted without any problems (although as mentioned above, some large memory SIMMS put pressure on the trapdoor and require cut-outs).

It's people who have later added heatsinks that have caused the issues!

My Apollo 1260 has a copper heatsink taken from the processor in a 1U server. It is pure copper and only about 10mm thick. I had to file down the fins on one side so it would fit, but it does the job very effectively!

But Steve, several Apollos came with the XC type of the 68k family, which requires a heatsink :/ So they sold products which would overheat in no time?

I'm pretty certain none came with heatsinks, happy to be corrected!

My Apollo 1260 originally came with a XC68EC060RC50, and although it got very hot it never seemed to become unstable. I replaced it with an MC68060RC60 71E41J which ran much cooler, but still decided to put the heatsink on so I can run it at 80Mhz.

I don't know about the 1260, but (some) of the 1240s appear to have been supplied with a set-up like this..

Mine had the same fan & heatsinks as the one pictured.

The 5v fan was a little screamer and worked intermittently. The heatsinks were stuck on with a blue paste, which can still be seen on many online pictures of 1240s,

060 but if you got an MC68060RC60 E41J it would be much colder. You could operate it at 50MHz without a heatsink or fan no problem.
