If it were a mac product, if it followed Steve's conventions, it would be elegant and simple to use. But its shareware, so it does not have to ahere to those rules. But I was trying it on my PC, and its not hard, just ugly as sin. It seems to be a dinosaur, going the way of FTP's.

It is probably better that we do the IRC chat on Saturday 15th December, as if we leave until Sunday then our Kiwi and Australian friends might have to do it on Monday morning. A weekend is better in this respect.

I fiddled around BBS's in the late 80's on my freind's C 64. It was fun no doubt. We are in 2001. As I said before, that stuff is retrograde bowelmovement.

Hmm...in my experience u don't get shit unless you are on IRC
sure its not the perfect medium, then again neither is reality...

P.S. 15th sounds neat for me
I'm usually not around on weekends, but if anyone else bothers to make an effort, i will so surely.

Those who seeketh perfection will not be satisfied in life, hence I seeketh not. I do seek reasonable satisfaction, tho

IRC chat must include Christmas presents

Can we get one of those nifty IRC file servers going that day, too? Surely Santa Claus will be bringing some Christmas presents to the good boys (girls?). Sorry, Fred, you only get a spanking from Conrad Bain's cold white hand!

LOL, DP!!!

What is Java IRC? Hopefully it's nothing like those java chat applets...ugh. System running at a snail's pace when Java unleashes its scripting toll.

We could probably use the Zone for uploads during the chat, as usual.

Question

Please excuse my ignorance on the subject, as I'm like Paul, in having never used or seen IRC/MIRC. Is this program already on the windows98 disk?

Is it anything like when you're engaging in a chat with a friend on ICQ,(Not the instant messaging, I mean when you engage in online "live" typing/"talking" to each other?

It's not quite so popular nowadays, but you get yourself a client like mIRC (for Windows) and log onto a server. Everyone else does the same and connects to a channel. Then you have a discussion with the other people in the channel.
Follow the mIRC link in the above quote for the software you need to participate (assuming you're a PC user, natch!)

Yes, it is realtime chat. Similar to chat rooms, although IRC was around long before chat rooms were. The way I believe chat rooms work is via java, which really puts a strain on your system (since it is, after all, just a scripting language), whereas mIRC is a compiled program that runs like any other normal software. Go ahead and grab it now and play with it a bit to get used to, because there is a bit of a learning curve (no more difficult than WinUAE, though).

I think IRC is l33t , I am ALWAYS conncted in Brasnet when I am browsing the web.

If you are interested in Internet Chat (And who isn't?), I say IRC is the way to go.

Fred, mIRC is ugly indeed, but you may try to download one of those scripts for it, it makes it a little less ugly.

Maybe I should run 2 IRC clients at the same time, so in one I do my everyday IRC stuff, and in the other one I'll stay at #amigatronic

There are many IRC clients available out there, many that handle multi-server connections.
mIRC is probably the most crap available and doesn't. I think its only redeeming feature is its large range of scripts available.

Some IRC clients you might like to look at.

Pirch98 (my fave, but not reliable on win2k)
Klient (looks ok but quite complex to set up properly)
Trillian (lot of ppl seem to like this)
Xircon (no idea)
mIRC (sux )

and there are probably lots more less known ones out there

Ack, come on, http://www.klient.com .

Download it, and you won't be disappointed. Kicks mIRC's years of development out the proverbial window

I suggest that the IRC chat starts at:

11:00 (San Francisco)
14:00 (New York)
19:00 (London)
20:00 (Paris)
06:00 (Brisbane)
08:00 (Wellington)
06:23 (Planet Marz)

[That's Sunday for all you New Zealanders and Australians]

Who wants instructions on how to do the IRC stuff?
