just cause i hate buying button cells batts and i take care of stuff so im not worried if they leak i have to watch regular caps anyways
so in the long run super caps i had already were my choice and im sure they wont be leaking anytime soon

those varta batts came in both Ni-Cad and NIMH
so im sure the Ni-Cads leaked way before
i dont remember 100% but i think 1 is red and 1 is blue

though i will say using the coincell and carrier does help hide a lot of the PCB damaged lol

sadly SuperCars are leaking too. Good example is the cap in the original XBox.

or Dreamcast
many things used super caps as batts
if i ever do anything different i would just do the AA batt deal and have it away from the boards
i have massive rechargeble stash of batteries lol kids
real purpose i even put anything there is to hide the PCB discoloring

looks like the pin was bent in a tad on installation might have been still making contact though as the way it was in the edge of the socket pin then bent to the other side and the pressure from other pins keepin it mounted to making contact

if you ever have to bend those type of pins back do it slowly or they can crack and snap off on you

you know how many people have said that to me and end up getting busy in life and putting their amiga in a closet or garage, only to have it leak lol.

A for the varta's yea nicad, nimh they all leak eventually. so why not just not use anything with leak potential, then u never have to worry about it ever again.

I have seen this with cheap chinese batts-unpure battery chemistry likely, stick with japan make panasonic or such.

yeah im always replacing caps so it just something im use to
nothing i have goes into the closet/ snake hole lol

but you will never get around the capacitor plaque still going on today
so watching or waiting for caps to fail is a daily thing in this house

that isnt how you measure capacitors
and you dont measure them on the board
i would fix everything else before worrying about the caps
you have more serious issues
also those are ceramic caps i doubt they are bad

did some continuity checks on the FPU and discovered an open circuit on a corner pin close to the battery. go figure.

the aftermath:

1 step forward and 2 steps back... i wan't feeling confident about jumpering the traces so i'm starting over. it may be better just to wire from the test points. won't look pretty but hopefully will have greater chance of success. i also desoldered the 40 pin socket closest to the battery for access (plus I burned it with the soldering iron when i was bridging the traces).

You can always leave the FPU alone for now. Jumper the mainboard not to use it and/or put in a 3630 and fix the essential stuff first.

just fyi the microscope will help you many ways besides seeing what you are doing
while soldering
it allows you too inspect every inch of the board which you may need to do
checking on solder joints traces etc etc
this type of work you really should have 1 could save you hours in finding out what is wrong
those i listed do many things like vid/snapshots/hdmi output/filters etc etc
even measurements
