Top 99 logic?
Could someone here explain the logic behind the query that produces the top 99?
Unique IP visits count on a particular game page? Or something else? I'm asking because some of the listed titles there every month seem quite random, especially on the top of the chart, see for example current first two places: Code:
POS NAME LAST MONTH HITS 1 Read-A-Rama 115 2 Fraction Action 112 3 Elite 109 |

It's indeed based on visits per game page That's why you get some 'surprising' results there

I noticed that they were both added to HOL last month, couldn't it be that the query counts whoever visits a game page, ignoring his/her IP, could it? I really can't imagine someone other than the guy who added the game and maybe 1-2 others to test if everything written is ok visiting those two pages... or is maybe some crawler that saw the new pages and inflated the counter? Also, is there somewhere an history of the top 99s available? Something that's not the (incomplete) one on the Internet Archive? |

All technical details about the implementation as well as backups of the past top 99s can only be answered/provided by RCK, but I wouldn't hold my breath until he sees this thread

One thing to note is that the HOL counter is only incremented when a game is visited through the game listings or latest updates. For example, visiting the HOL entry from an external page won't increase it.
Also, anyone logged in to the HOL and editing pages won't affect the counter. |
