Can you use solid state capacitors for cap replacement?

it seems due to age a lot of our machines are failing due to the capacitors leaking.one question i often seen asked around the amiga forums is,can you replace the caps on your amiga board with solid state ones?i haven't read an definite answer, has anyone here tried with with any success?.

I guess I'll just have to ask a stupid question, what's a solid state capacitor? I know they can simulate capacitors and inductors on ICs, is that what you are talking about?

It means aluminum electrolytic capacitors that have solid electrolytic instead of wet electrolytic (can't leak). Solid polymer aluminum capacitor or something like that

They should work perfectly fine, at least in place of aluminum electrolytics that are used for power filtering. (which is the most common use)

I have an old dead PC motherboard with these things dotted all over it, I can only hope that as the future trundles along they don't cause some unseen problems.

As long as it's equivalent spec I can't see why not. New machines or old, it's all the same magic smoke

2 month ago I did my second A1200 board with only Radial Electrolytic capacitors.
I'll take a picture.

You might want to read about what happens to tantalum capacitors when they go short circuit, you may also want to read about ripple tolerance and you may finally wish to retract your post above.
