What do the letters in the adf names mean?

I am confused as to what [a] etc means in the adf titles, could anyone point me to a list please? things such as Rainbow Islands (1987)(Ocean)[a].adf no idea what the a means. thanks.

Bad dump Alpha Flight - Compacted Disk No. 188 (19xx)(Alpha Flight)[b] from EAB server is not bootable but files are visible in WorkBench. It's from /compilations/games but only few utilities and 3 demos on disk:
