I built a similar device, it works great with a PS/2 "Genius" mouse that I bought, such smooth and slick movement I built it in a rather large case for prototyping purposes, but you can put it in a much smaller case just like Cocolino.

With regards to AmigaKit price of Cocolino it is a little on the high side but I feel some of the comments here are a bit harsh on Matthew, don't forget that AmigaKit is his living, he has a unit, VAT, other tax, presumably accountancy fees to pay etc I'm not sure if AmigaKit manufacture the Cocolino, I'm thinking not, so a profit still has to be made on the sale of it after it has been purchased.

Someone knocking some together as a favour for people on a forum is always, always going to be the cheaper option

@chaoticjelly

As a frequent Amigakit customer, I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment.
However, in this instance I felt that supporting the innovation of a fellow forum member was more important.

Just need to get the bloody thing working lol

@DDNI

Of course; there are some very nice hardware projects on here at the moment, it's important to support hardware enthusiasts and DIY solutions for those inclined.

I haven't tried an optical mouse with my self-made adapter yet, I wonder if my Razer Diamondback might work if I change the PS/2 socket to USB. That would be awesome

Ok, i have found thats it is a software error in the pic. looks like its a parity error when i am sending data to the mouse. Some mice do not check this partity bit and so work even if its incorrect. Others like to see the partity bit and kick up a fuss about it. Im working on the code to fix this.

Good news. So are you optimistic that you will have a fix?

Hi Dimlow,

As I'm on the other side of the world my kit has not arrived yet, but should be with me some time next week going from past experience.

Should I post just the PIC back to you?

I will of course cover all costs involved...this is not your fault, especially when what you started as an experiment has turned into what I see as you being pressured by myself & others into selling something you hadn't had a chance to test thoroughly (read: this problem is NOT your fault)

Well i have got my mouse working, could be as simple as pull up resistors. I use the internal pull ups in the pic, but i don't think they are strong enough. So i put some on the board and it works

But also it could also need a software mod in the pic, I have modified and adjusted the software so much, I'm unable to revert it back to how it was when i shipped the adaptors. so i cant tell right now, but i do have a backup i will try later.

Still busy, i will give more detail later

Hang on to your pic for now Finger!

Ok this is what i have done.

these are 4.7k resistors from the two centre pins on the USB connector to the 5v supply,the second pin from the left of the d connector in the picture. This works with the mouse in my test setup that has its own power supply. But it does not work with the Amiga. The mouse is drawing to much power. I don't know how to sort this out as yet. Still working on it, but its time to get some food. I'm off to the chinese take away.

Just to clarify...although it seems obvious, my question is if this problem only relates to optical mice?

If a ball mouse will work with this, then I don't care at all, as there are some decent ball mice

Yes, there is news, the mod above will make it work with more mice, but not all. I have been working on new firmware and have got it to work on the Amiga with USB/p2s mice, but i need to rewrite the firmware because of the way i have dealt with the PS2 communications having no timeouts in the the send and receive bytes code. Some USB mice start to speak usb language first this causes the pic to lock up before the mouse switches to PS2 language. A quick fix was for me to reset the pic in software when the mouse stops talking to the pic, ie if you unplug and plug it in again or the mouse is speaking USB. But then this also causes a reset every 2 seconds as I'm using the watch dog timer in the pic to do this reset. This does make the mouse work but it has a little wiggle on the screen because when the pic is reset the status of the H, HQ and V,VQ Amiga lines changes on reset, this is not wanted so I'm having to rethink the whole of the code with proper timeouts in the comms.

The good news is the mouse works perfect if you use a true PS2 mouse as the controller was designed for this. USB/ps2 mice will need new firmware for it to work 100%. Who's idea again was it for me to put a USB connector in the board!!!! Extra good news it that it will support hot plugging of mice when i have finished the changes to the code.

I will not be selling anymore kits until this has been fixed.

For those of you that have kits and want to use USB/ps2 mice and not just standard PS2 mice i will have to give you new firmware for the pic.

You can voluntarily send the pic back to me if you want.

I will be sending out new pics when i have made the firmware updates.

Please keep in mind that i work during the week, so progress will be slow. Weekends i have more time.

Dimlow, thanks for sticking with this.
It sounds like you are making progress. I will send my unit back to you.

I am in no great rush for it, so please dont feel pressured to turn it around quickly.

I too am in no rush and would rather have a better device at the end of your hard work. Just let us know when you think you have got the best you think you can achieve. Good luck with the progress and keep up the great work. I (along with everyone else) really appreciate it.
