CD32 Competition Pro joypad issues with whdload

Certain games like fire and ice wont even register the joypad

Same for choas engine cd32 and a game like skelten crew is all over the place

Street Fighter 2 is another one

Are those whdload bugged or is it hardware

Normal games seem to register it fine two button wise

Os 3.9 Bb2

Street Fighter II supports only 2 button joystick/gamepad, like Mastersystem ones.

For other games the problem can be the hardware revision of your motherboard.
Some 1D.4 Commodore are fussy.
2B revisions have problems with CD32 joypads.

Anyway there are a lot of discussions on the forum about this.

Please test other games with CD32 controls added (for instance here: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=68797) and report.

The mentionned games may use lowlevel.library, through emulated kickstart. Some other games use hardware read. If there's one game where the CD32 controls work, then it's not a hardware issue.

(some original games also have broken 2nd button support originally, fixed in whdload slave)

Cd32 games tested that work whdload

Brutal sports football
Alien bread 3D
Cannon Fodder CD32
Gloom CD32
Zool
Chuck Rock
Bashee

Now a minor list of non working ones

Fire And Ice CD32 joypad wont register
Super Methane Bros cd32 joypad wont register
Choas engine cd32 same as above
Roadkill controller goes dead after breaking

Relating To games you linked to thread wise

Aladdin work perfectly 2nd button wise

Note : joypad wont register means it completely unresponsive

looks like a problem with lowlevel.library code. I'm pretty sure that the games you're mentionning not to work are using lowlevel.library, where the others don't.

For instance Chuck Rock & Zool (floppy) are using custom (hardware) joypad read. If this works, it means that SOTB3, Desert Strike, Ruff&Tumble, Deliverance, and all originally non-CD32 games work, cos they're using hardware read.

I'm going to try to adapt the ones that don't work to use the hardware routine. If that works, your problem (and all 1B-rev motherboard owners) is solved.

Maybe opening issues on whdload mantis would be a good idea (mentionning the 1B-rev thingy)

Some games just don't like the CD32 pad. Take the Licenceware game Outfall... the d-pad works fine but no buttons register in the game at all, it only requires one fire button as well.

@acid

Was that a cd32 version of outfall or just a normal game i know not all games - whd slaves like the controller but

Fire and ice cd32
Super methane bros cd32
The choas engine cd32

I was expecting to work i was hoping to have more issues with the broken 2 button support

Also noticed that on one A1200 1D.4 Commodore I own (recapped) CD32 pad is recognized via lowlevel.library if I use an original 3A Power Supply.
With a PC ATX one joypad is recognized only in direct hardware access.

Other motherboards (1D.1, 1D.4 A.T.) don't have problems.

Outfall is a standard executable with no slave written for it. I was merely using it as an example that not all games play nicely with the CD32 controller.

Psygore has written a good tool (http://aminet.net/package/driver/input/JoyPortTest) to check for joypad. Can use lowlevel or not. Useful to test those broken boards.

A little update on this

It seem the games i mention are defaulting to joystick mode

For Fire & Ice if i used the mouse in player 1 port i can start the game when i switch back to cd32 controller can move but cant fire

For Super Metheane bros same applies - chaos engine same

And just to double check things games wise they work fine with a normal joystick

Also when it comes to the lowlevel library http://www.whdload.de/games/Virocop.html uses it and the cd32 joypad works fine

anyone with a joypad problem on a game can open a mantis issue http://mantis.whdload.de, specifying the type of joypad and the motherboard that they have if you know it

also specifying which slaves work with your setup.

noticed the same thing with a few of the titles mentioned using a competition pro cd32 controller, however, swithcing to an original cd32 batarang controller the problems vanished.
Seems a case of the CP/honeybee controller just isnt 100% compatible with all games

please which ones? and were they updated in the meantime? does the problem persist?
If so please open a separate mantis issue for each one. Else it's just a vague statement that doesn't help much.

I've fixed a lot of controller issues recently and even if I don't have the hardware I figured out why joypads work most of the time and honeybee/other third party don't:

- reading joypad too late (beam vpos is too low), leaving little time to get the button values
- reading joypad too frequently (while unpause test for instance), generating bogus button reads (even with winuae)
- not removing the read of CIA Port A ($BFE001) or POTGO ($DFF016) when plugging a joypad button reading routine in
- of course the classical "forget to reset POTGO" after reading it by writing $FF00 into $DFF034

those are the main culprits.
