Another HD Toolbox Question

When it come to an expanded amiga aca1233n card wise aka 68030 128mb ram

I courious about 2 options

1 Would improving the block size to 4090 hurt and what are the benfits.

2. I heard of adding more buffers on expanded amiga so what is recommended
I know the default is 150

When you read up on amiga stuff like this it peak my curioursity. Also touching these would be unwise on an unexpanded amiga due to ram?

Increasing the block size is a good thing if you're using the FFS file system due to the way it works, but if you're using SFS or PFS you should leave it at 512. Under FFS, a larger blocksize can significantly increase the speed of transfers. 4096 is a good value, and I believe others have found that improvements can still be had up to 16384 bytes.

There are a couple of minor factors to be aware of when increasing the block size however:
First, a block is the smallest unit of size that can be used for storing files, and everything takes up a whole number of blocks. That means that a 20-byte file will take 1 block of space, whether that's 512 bytes or 16KB. Similarly, a 4,200-byte file will take nine 512-byte blocks of space (4,608 bytes), or two 4,096-byte blocks (8192 bytes). So larger block sizes mean slightly more wasted space on the partition, mainly if you have a lot of small files.
Second, the Buffers parameter is the number of blocks to reserve in RAM as a sort of cache for that partition. If you have 100 buffers set with a 512-byte block size, that will use up ~50KB of RAM. If you have 100 buffers set with a 16KB block size, that will use up ~1.6MB of RAM. With lots of fast RAM, that's not a problem, but you might have difficulty using the system without fast RAM. So decreasing the number of buffers might be a good idea with large block sizes.

As for a good value for buffers, they also make a significant different to access speeds, but there's a diminishing returns effect that means adding more than maybe 150-200 has little or no effect. From memory I think all mine are set to 150.

The values for block size and buffer size Daedalus mentioned are depending on the used filesystem. One buffer can mean 512 bytes, 1024 bytes or size = buffer x block size. Also the amount/limit of buffer is different. So make sure how the used filesystem works. In most cases reading the docs should give the answers.
